How did the "scanner" tell you that it's a valve spring problem.

i guess i should have said his scanner showed a misfire on no.2 cyl. then he said it might be a weak or broken spring.

A misfire can be caused by many things, such as a bad plug/plug wire, coil problem, or fuel injector issue. Even a small vacuum leak can cause a single cyl to have a misfire.
Yes, a weak or broken valve spring can cause this, but check the external stuff first. Especially if the misfire is intermittent.

thanks Mr. Rogue, apperantly a broken or weak valve spring can be fixed by changing to
a lighter weight oil. i put 10w40 in when i changed the oil my mech. found a thech paper from ford saying use 5w20 because heavier oil stayed in the lifters causing them to hold th valve open. i changed to 5w20 and so far the engine is running ok, so i guess i'll wait to see the outcome.
