C6 slips in drive but works fine if manually shifted

I have a 78 f100 2wd, 300 inline 6 and ive put 2 c6 transmissions in it. The transmission shakes real bad in reverse. When you put it in drive and try to take off it wants to quit pulling but when you put it in first gear and shift up to 2nd it works perfect. My plan was to just junk the C6 and switch to a manual trans but I dont know what trans I would swap it with. Im young and dont have a lot of experience so please enlighten me!

From what you described it sounds like there is some internal damage of some kind, to what extent will be determined by a complete disassemble of the transmission.

You may be able to find someone to bench build you one of your old ones for a few hundred bucks if its not trashed, and don't reuse the converter.

The quote my local trans shop gave me to rebuild it was 1800 dollars and that dont include labor! I may tear into it to see how it ticks and may try to rebuild it if I think I can.

If you had done that at my shop I would have banned you and maybe called the cops, too.
