4X4 lights flash and cruis issue

I have an 03, with 175K on it. Wife still loves this thing, and it has really held up well.
I have the issue where the 4X4 lights flash at times. both high and low at the same time. Also the cruise works at times, then just lets go, other times it will not catch at all.
From reading this sounds like the rear diff speed sensor? Or am I missing something? and will that cause both issues?
Thanks
Doug

Probably not the rear diff sensor. More likely, you have two separate issues.

For the speed control, inspect/test the SCDS on the master cylinder. Sounds like yours might be failing.

Put the HEC into DTM and see if you have any codes stored in the cluster. Beyond that, you'll need a capable scan tool to interrogate the 4x4 control system. You might also have an ABS concern so verify the ABS light proves out. An ABS fault will affect the 4X4 system.

When the lights flash, is there any pattern? Also, which particular vehicle do you have? There are often subtle differences.

ok, I got lost in the lingo. all the abbreviations. Is there a list somewhere?
So not likely the speed sensor but maybe both ABS related? or 2 separate issues.
Last time we had the 4X4 light issue the trans was a little low on fluid. And it went away. This time it is at normal level.
We only use this as a family car, but live down the gravel and up a large hill.
the car is an 03, XLT. With 4wd, and a 4.6L
I only have a code scanner from autozone. I am willing to read and learn, just need to know where to look.
Thanks

Not sure which problem you are trying to solve first, but you might want to check with your dealer to see if your vehicle is covered by the cruise control recall, and if it is, they should be able to tell you if your vehicle has had the new harness installed.

Even if the new harness is installed (they're just a fuse to keep the truck from catching fire when the switch eventually leaks), that won't determine if you have a bad SCDS. You'd have to bypass the harness and switch, then retest, to see if it's a switch problem.

Thanks, Guess I should separate this into 2 issues?
Of more concern is the 4X4 flashing, and what may be wrong with it. I could live without cruise.

I believe that if there is an issue with the tranny or transfer case, such as the light being on or flashing, then the cruise control is disabled by default. So once you solve the 4x4 light issue the cruise might take care of itself.

You can guess all day over what is turning on the 4x4 light, but in the end it is probably less expensive and aggravating to just bring it in and have it scanned for a trouble code.
