HPOP Gasket Leaking?

I took the truck in yesterday for what I thought would be a leaky glow plug harness, but they just called and said the real leak is the HPOP gasket. The leak isn't very bad and hasn't increased since it started about 3 years ago (after oil cooler and EGR cooler). I don't want to drop the $1900 they quoted for a new HPOP and labor, especially after they said the pump is working fine. What would you guys do? Just let it leak and replace the HPO if it breaks? The truck is running perfect and no codes are present. I'm thinkning let it ride.

No, mine is the later motor with the ICP on the passenger valve cover. Also, I just read a thread on another site that said you can't see a HPOP leak on my motor because its on the inside. Does that make any sense? They said they ran the dye and the tech saw the leak from the HPOP.

I would suggest you powerwash the engine thoroughly, and run the engine for about an hour to see where the leak re-appears. An oil pressure switch or aftermarket oil filter cap o-ring can leak oil too.

Are you saying that the tech could be mis-diagnosing a $1900 problem? I just talked to my warranty company and they might cover it. The dealer is contacting them with the info to see. I'm not going to shell out that kind of cash to fix an oil leak when they are saying that nothing else is wrong and it will run fine without it. I've read too many stories on hear about people going through all this trouble to fix a leak and it never gets resolved. I guess I'll just keep the oil catcher on the driveway and clean up. I didn't mention that it isn't bad enough to even need to add oil between changes.

Its a no go. I'm picking it up tomorrow. The warranty would not cover the gasket. I did get the serpentine belt replaced, front end alignment, and oil change done. I'm ready for vacation.

the ither thing that comes to mind is the gasket on the top of the turbo. I dont really ever think I have seen a pump cover leak, not that it cant happen but not in the list of common.

I just read the paperwork again. It says "suspect HPOP gasket". If the tech saw the dye in that area, couldn't he pinpoint where it is coming from? Or is that just a cyo to put "suspect". Plus, I looked at the glow plug harness and it still looks like old oil aroung them and no sign of dye. What is the normal procedure for running dye through the engine. Should I see some dye around the glowplug harness? They did change the oil afterward, but I can see that the area around the glow plug harness has not been wiped down.

you will need a black light to try and trace it. to see what it should look like take off the oil fill cap and shine a black light on it. sometimes it helps to wear yellow colored glasses too.

I'll give it a good look Saturday. Now I'm second guessing that I should have just let them change the glow plug harnesses to see what happens. I think that I'll order the harnesses and do it when I get time. I guess I could second guess the tech all day on the HPOP gasket, but I can see that the oil is coming out the glow plug harness on at least half the cylinders on each side.

Well here is an update. My oil leak appears to have stopped. I have been back from Yellowstone for almost 2 weeks and not a drop on the drive. 2 things happened. 1. I ran into a short post and wrinkled up my right front fender in Montana. I don't think that fixed it, although stranger things have happened. 2. On the way back we stopped for the first night. While checking my oil and having a general look see, I noticed my turbo tube was resting on my oil fill cap and had melted it a little. So I got the sockets and loosened up all the clamps on the tube and moved it off the cap. I tightened them down. While I was there I adjusted and tightened the rest of the clamps on the tubes. I am thinking that maybe one of them was leaking a little? Does this sound possible? If so, $1800, to replace the HPOP because of the gasket leaking, really?
