100 rpm/min with ignition off. Hardly cranks over with ignition on???
I ask the circle of wise and sage folks to help me figure this out.
With the ignition switch on the gauges move the heater motor will come one when witched.Everything seems to be the way it should be.Push the starter button and it will roll over, pause,do another revolution, pause, maybe roll over 3-4 times and it's back to,pause, etc.
Turn the ignition switch off and it will spin 100+rpm without a hitch.
Earlier today while it was doing the "hard to crank over" it did start.I ran it for 30 seconds(no water in it),and it purred like a fine watch.
I'll check everything tomorrow but any hints on where to start would be welcome.
Cheers to all!

What sort of shape is the battery in? I would measure the batt voltage while cranking especially when the fault is occuring. It should not drop more than two volts while cranking. Make sure you have the test prods on the battery terminal not on the clamp. If everything is as it should be then move your prods to the battery clamp at the end of the cable and test again. If you get a drop of more than two volts, then you have dirty connections. Next move your positive prod to the starter post. If more than two volts drop then you have a bad cable or dirty connections alon the way somewhere.

If it's not the battery and connections like fixnair has suggested and it is still doing that, check the wiring between your ignition switch and the solenoid and button start. Sounds like the starter isn't getting enough power but that wouldn't have anything to do with the switch and button. More than likely a grounding problem.

Hi All,
The 6 v battery is new,as is every wire, connector, etc. The Engine, frame, firewall, cab, etc is all grounded with big fatty cables, new lugs onto bright and shiny steel coated with oxide paste.
The engine did start and with a nice even purr. I thought about the timing being off,but figure it should be within reason because last year I could start it anytime. I may have bumped something,I'll check.
I think I'll start by ohming out the wire between the ignition switch and coil, next the coil to distributor.I'll diconnect all the other wires on the ignition switch.
When it starts it's going down for tags. It's not finished, but taggable.
Thanks Everyone.
Cheers
