Fuel tank sizes???

Before I ruffle any feathers, I did read the sticky at the top of the page. It says that the rear mounted tanks have a capacity of 19 gallons. A quick look-up for replacement tanks shows 19 gallons as standard replacement for both of my trucks.

My trucks, '88 4X4 with single tank in rear and '92 4X2 with dual tanks, both raise a question to me. I fuel them up with the needle just above the E on the gauge and it takes around 13 gallons to top it off, so is there still @ six gallons still in the tank? I haven't been brave enough to try and push it any farther.

I know it may seem like a petty thing to worry about, but it's kinda bugging me.

The fuel gauges in these trucks are notoriously inaccurate and non-linear(no guarantee each 1/4 on the gauge is the same fuel volume), and there were both 16g and 19g options for each tank so you could end up with one of several combinations. My truck has a 16g rear and 19g front for example, while others report the opposite capacities and others have two 19g tanks. I don't think any trucks came with 2 small tanks however.

My front tank is 19 and my gauge will be on E but i can still drive on it for what seems like a whole other 1/4 tank. My rear is a 16 and the first 1/4 goes quick then slows down.

I've had lots of experience with the quirky fuel gauges. I had one that when it got close to E you had better get some gas, hence my hesitation to push my luck with this one.

I did see a 38 gallon replacement listed online, anyone with experience using it? Would like to hear any negative thoughts on it.
