Why you should change/refresh your air filter...

I purchase my 2005 Excursion 6.0L about 2 weeks ago and have been doing some PM as well as basic upgrades. This weekend was to inspect and recondition the aFe air filter. What I found was not cool.

Pic 1: Note the trash all over my garage floor that fell out when I simply disassembled the filter from the housing.

Pic 2: The housing had surface rust and peeling paing all over. I couldn't put it back in the truck like that.

Pic 3: Sanded housing, removed surface rust and peeling paint.

Pic 4: Primed/painted housing. I used Dupli-Color Rust fix as a primer (it claims to stop the rust oxidation) and then a Dupli-Color, heat-tolerant engine black. It won't win any custom paint job awards, but no more rust and peeling paint.

Pic 5: Reconditioned aFe air filter with their cleaner and oil.

Pic 6: Reinstalled and looking good (at least compared to how it came out).

Next up: Blue Spring upgrade.

cheezit.
I agree with you so much.
I had a K&N in a Explorer

I owned so may years ago and got tired of having to clean the
Mass Air Flow sensor, and throttle plate that I removed the thing
Thinking that if I was seeing this what else was getting past.

The Powershop in Enumclaw had given me a list of things to upgrade
they said use the Banks unit because the back side seal on the Ford one
de-formes. I thought at the time I would stick with the Ford one because
I had already been doing research on the 6.0L
Hell if the Ford one works and gets the job done. Why should I change it?
I am not a if it don't go chrome it type of guy

I bought the X with the aFe filter but have read about sticking with OEM. I've had a P0299 CEL (Over/Under boost) while towing my 8,000# travel trailer. Not good omens... Thanks guys.

Donadlson P603577-EA (blue media)

Taking your advice. Thanks.

Go by the filter vacum gauge. They are quite reliable.
