help with a 6.0 Garrett turbo and 2004 F350

Hi everyone I need some help with diagnosing a F350 diesel. Here's the short story

1- Egr and Oil cooler went out and had the Turbo Rebuilt. Replaced Oil cooler with new one and new bulletproof EGR. changed all the fluids and flushed as recommented.

2- 1000 miles later I hear a loud bang and have a ton of oily smoke out the exhaust. Find out the rebuilt turbo snappe dthe exhaust side fins off and it shot down the downpipe into the exhaust piping. Cleaned that all out and let the oil drain out.

3- replaced and had rebuilt a used working early 2004 turbo (mines a Later 2004) Put that on thinking it was hunky dory and i got to the gas station and one th eway back i hear a pop and oily smoke out the exhaust. No leaks though under the engine.

4- So now that I'm on turbo # 3 and getting really pissed off. Is there anything i need to look for or test before running the truck when I get the new rebuilt later 2004.5-07 turbo. I've checked everything else an dall seems to be good but I'm only a handyman and cannot test pressures.

Any ideas what to look for. All oil is brand new and parts aren't leaking at all it idles fine but not much power now and the smokey ehaust is always there. Definately oil in the exhaust.

It's a later model 2004 F350 6.0 Diesel. with 116xxx on it.

I have no idea here just throwing some ideas out. Iv delt with gas power turbo engine.
Are you running a chip?
Do you have the correct diverter valve or blow off valve for the amount of boost you are running? If not, I believe the extra boost can be sent back to the turbo putting stress on the impeller.

Make sure the turbo is getting sufficient oil. Also, where are you getting the turbos from and who rebuilt your first one, same source?

No chips and the turbos are from electrodiesel in TX. the first one lasted about a 1000 miles the second one like I said was a early model and my original was a later model 04. How would I check the oil flow???

Same failure with two turbos from the same company tells me they are having problems with their rebuilds. Checking oil flow is messy, basically disconnect the oil feed and run it into a catch can. Have someone else crank/start the engine and observe the flow rate. Just don't run it very long without the turbo getting oil, and don't rev it up.

Ugghhh that's what I was thinking was the case. that definately sounds messy. But it's worth it to make sure i have good flow. I'll let you know what I find here. I bought a newer rebuilt one from a different company so maybe with luck this one will last a little while at least enought to get to a dealership....

My two cents here. I have rebuilt a few oil coolers never a turbo. The oil cooler feeds the oil supply to the turbo. If you disconnect the feed line and check for flow you really wont know what is sufficient or not. This turbo utilizes oil pressure to shuttle a piston to move to vanes of the turbo based on several factor i.e. throttle position, Exhaust back pressure, etc. Long story short based on the thought of low oil pressure did the truck lack power. Second are we absolutely sure the oil cooler has all required seals

There is an upgraded drain tube for the turbo, not sure if it would help you...

Drain tube looked good and I did completelt remove the OIl cooler Also last time the turbo went out I just wanted to double check my seals. down to the egr cooler. So everything came off.

And yes I did have some lack of power once this new turbo was on that lasted 1/2 a mile. It really didn't want to shift gears. I plan on checking the oil flow and removing the old non-working turbo next week when it cools down a bit and I have some down time.

I think there is a turbo relearn with the stock turbo. Disconnecting the batteries for a few minutes.

Speaking of turbo, how much did you pay for the turbo? Can anyone tell me is this a good idea to buy a spare turbo for $351. It said the turbo was reonditioning. Or anyone need one for a spare. Craiglist link below

so the compressior wheel went down the exhaust down pipe?
I have seen it happen a few times. if you dont get the wheel out you will need to replace the outlet pipe or the same thing will happen again
