using auto shaft, modified to fit zf5??

I cant find a used shaft locally. I have a 1991 f350 diesel crew cab 8 ft box, converted auto to manual. Can i simply have a shop chop off the trans side of the auto shaft, weld on the appropriate yoke, extend it 14.5" and bobs your uncle?
