More Horse Power 5.4L 05 Lariat

I sold my 2001 5.4L F-150 XLT and moved up to a 2005 Lariat. I knew the newer truck would be slower, but Im really missing the power of the old truck. I tow a boat (4500 lbs.) and the Lariat seems to strain going up hills.
What Mods you guys suggest??. Im not looking for a loud exhaust or kick in the pants tranny shifts. This truck has a very refinded ride and I would like to keep it that way.I figure 50 Hp gain would do it for me.
Would a supercharger be overkill for everyday use..how much noise do they add?
Anyone put a V10 in this truck?
I did a search but the topics are a few years old.
Thanks, Chris

I'm not that up on the 150's but am I missing something? The 2005 3valve 5.4 already has more hp and torque than the 2 valve 5.4 in your 2001. Different gears maybe? Was there a tuner on your 2001?

The new truck should feel like it has more power than your old one. I think you may have some other kind of problem going on. With it being a lariat, it should have either the 3.55 or the 3.73 diff. Mine has the 3.73 LS diff and 35 inch tires and tows 5k lbs very good.

Other than a SC, you are not going to get +50 hp out of any mod on the 5.4L.

Using 91+ octane you might get 35-40 with a custom tune.

Thanks for the replys. Both my wife and I went from a 2V 5.4L to the 3V 5.4L. The newer truck is definetly slower. When you read reviews for this truck its usally mentioned that its a bit of a dog due to its weight. I also read about it in other posts how the older truck is faster.
I think there is a supercharger in my future!!

Don't know what to tell you but facts are facts, in stock form, your new truck has 40 more hp and 15 ft/lbs more than your old truck in stock form. If that power isn't getting to the ground that's another matter. Don't know the weights off hand but I'm guessing the new one is pretty close to the same weight as your old one so that doesn't hold water either. Good luck w/ the supercharger.

Based on my experience. The stock 2007 5.4L displayed improved power and torque over my 2002 5.4L, tows better as well. The 2002 5.4L drove much better than the 98 5.4L. It's my third F150 with 5.4L, the 3v proved to be superior than other two. To start with the process, I would do the tuneup on your 2005 and go from there. It should show improved power over the 2001, unless you had the 2001 mod to the max?

I've got to say that my '05 feels quicker than my '02 did. '02 was extended cab and '05 is crew so I know there's a weight gain there too. Part of it seems to be better response and lower RPM torque increase. I have yet to tow with my '05 though, I haven't had it for that long.

I don't care what the numbers say, the 2v trucks are faster. The weight problems of the newer trucks is almost out of control.*
Curb weight of a 1995 f150 ext cab is about 4200
Curb weight of a 2000 f150 ext cab is 4200
Curb weight of a 2005 f150 ext cab skyrockets to 5500 pounds. That's a lot!

As the math goes 100 pounds is .10 of a second. In the 1/4 of a mile. That relates to 1000 pounds per second.*
The 5.4 2v only made 50 less hp. Horsepower per ton is better on the 2v.*

Which versions are these weights for? From my research the only versions of the 2000 version truck that are around 4200lbs are 2X4 reg cab. My 05 CREW cab 4X4 is 5500lbs, but if you look at the previous version F150 Crew 4X4 (apples to apples), you're still looking at is 5100lbs. It appears there's a ~400lbs gain and not 1300lbs.

Thanks GwarForAll...I was beginning to doubt my own experience after reading the posts. I have been through (2) 5.4 2V and (2) 4V trucks. I have towed the same 5000 lbs. boat through the same streets to get to the same boat ramp with the older and newer trucks. There is a difference!! The older truck accelerated better!!

All three trucks are xlt extended cab 2wd with the biggest v8 (5.8 5.4 2v 5.4 3v)

The 4x4 is only about 150 pounds more which would land you at 5550 pounds. My truck a 07 fx4 weighs in at 5750 with me in it as you can guess it I weigh 200 pounds.

On another note 4200 - 5100 = 900 not 400 :,(

The OP has a 4wd truck, so why would you even consider looking at 2wd weights? Apples to apples bud, not apples to oranges.

Here are the spec sheets:
2001: 2003 Ford F150 Specifications
SCab 4wd 6ft bed is base weight of 4741lbs

2005: 2005 Ford F-150 Specifications
SCab 4wd 6ft bed is base weight of 5471lbs

Now that you have the proper weights for the two trucks he's talking about (remember this is still base weight and doesn't account for gear ratios, cargo boxes, etc) you can almost accurately compare the two.

As far as a V-10, that would be old school tech now. Now you can get the 6.1 liter V-8 that replaced the V-10, it puts out over 400 hp in the raptor and takes up less space. The 5.4 3v has the power, it's a matter of getting it to the ground. A good set of gears would make a big difference a long with tightening up the tranny shift points. A good engine programer would most likely help you out and give you that extra omph you desire.
