These brave men are the real American Idols. The courage, and determination it took to run off of those landing crafts is without question is one of our greatest generations, at their best.

My grandmother's 3rd husband, Frank, was supposed to be one of those who landed on Normandy on D-Day, but as he told me once "the boat I was on hit another boat and we couldn't land until repairs were made" - he finally got to get on the beach on D-Day +3.

Very well said!

When the term, "The Greatest Generation" was first used. . . . it not only was true, but, it was genius.

God Bless them, all.

I believe that phrase was popularized by Tom Brokaw in his book of the same title. I remember attending a program at the local high school in which Mr. Brokaw was the featured speaker. He spoke of his book and those of "The Greatest Generation". All in all...it was a very moving speech. I had the honor of attending with my father who was in the USN at the end of WWII.

I think I remember seeing/reading something about Tom Brokaw using that phrase.

It was. . . genius.

Dad was in the Navy, also.
He served February/March '41- February '46, and was onboard USS Enterprise, when Pearl Harbor was bombed.

He wound up on an LSM, as Electrician's Mate, at the end of the war.

My dad was on the USS Massey as a machinists mate. He also served on the USS Robert I Paine. His service was towards the end of WWII...he never saw any combat.

I would only hope that I have the courage and dedication that the men of the allied forces showed on the 6th of June 1944.
Nothing in my service required me to face the enemy in the direct manner the troops of "D-day" did.

Alot of them men would still been alive to be with their families if Roosevelt didn't do like he did and Britian and Winston Churchill. I'll probably get looked at bad for this but oh well.

I had family who was in service during WW2 for America by the way.

What was done that day was nothing short of incredible..........The American public could never stomach those types of casualties today.

But that and incredible courage was the only thing that was going to win that day.

Depends on what you mean. Different tactics, or let the ***** have Europe....
