85 F150 very high idle
Started out as a different problem. A few days ago while driving it just died on me. After a few minutes it fired back up. It did this to me on a few occasions so I did some research and replaced the ignition control module. Still had some problems and ended up replacing the throttle position sensor. Now I am confused. Now it won't start unless I unplug theTPS. Then when I plug it in it idles very high. What am I missing?
Sorry, I posted this in the wrong forum.

Welcome to FTE.
Sounds to me like the TPS was the problem; did you first pull codes from the computer?
When changing the TPS or IAC (aka ISC) I first disconnect the battery. When reconnected and engine started, it needs to relearn the idle speed setting. Without doing that, the computer has no idea that you changed that component and is basing the idle speed on the values it learned from the old sensor.

OK, I merged the two threads into one, and deleted some redundant posts.
Here is how to pull codes... a code reader borrowed from an auto parts store will work (need to do it in their parking lot), a test light/voltmeter will work, as can one of the dash lights.

Thanks for all the help. I am going to look at it again today. The autoparts stores told me that they can't get codes from anything older than a '96. The TPS is on the bottom of the hrottle body and has very little adjustment. It can twist a couple degrees, and I tried in in various locations. I also went back to the store that I bought it from and traded it for a different one, but no difference. I di do the work with the battery cable disconnected and drove it a few miles to see if it would smooth out but it didn't.
I am going to try the self test to get codes. If it still points to the TPS maybe I will get a Motorcraft TPS?
Thanks again.
