1949 F3 transmission question
My 49 F3 has a 4 spd transmission. On one side it says WG CO, T8 D
-1A. On the other side it says 59T-7006, N9. Can anybody tell me anything about it? It is difficult to downshift (even double clutching) without grinding gears, but everything else seems okay. Shifting up gives a little grinding, but is a lot easier.
Thanks!

Not sure about the lettering; will have to look at mine but the shifting sounds about right. Shifting up does require double clutching and some patience! Down shifting requires even more patience and getting the RPM just right....most time I don't even bother but can go from 4th to 3rd double clutching and the right RPM, though probably at about 25 to 30 mph !

It is the same transmission as the T9. I found this out searching previous posts. Well, at least I know that the tranny isn't broken, just a really bad rear seal currently. Leaks like a sieve. I will just have to practice I reckon. What tires to you have on your F3. I found a set of 17.5 rims, but can you recommend a tire to go on them??

As for 17.5" tires, Universal Tire and other vintage sources have the 8-17.5" tires readily available. Stu

I had trouble down shifting until I met an original owner at car show. I started talking about double clutching and I asked how you down shift one of these trucks. I followed his advice and I am about 90% successful:
You have to push the clutch in before shifting into low gear to start going. That procedure is just like any other transmission but the fun starts when you shift to a higher gear, you have to push the clutch in, shift to neutral release the clutch move the shifter to the next gear, but don't shift into the higher gear until you push the clutch and then move shifter into the higher gear. You have to do this each time you upshift. It takes a little rythm to get it to go soothly.
The really fun part is down shifting around corners. When you get to the corner, or other obstacle that calls for reducing speed, slow the truck and push in the clutch, shift to neutral and release the clutch. Next move the shifter to the lower gear but do not shift into the gear, while doing this goose the gas a little and push the clutch in and shift into the lower gear.
