the OEM Motorcraft plugs, they are single platinum!! But, the plugs in one bank have a different letter suffix in the P/N than the
plugs in the other bank. This is because the outer electrode is
platinum on one plug P/N, while the center electrode is platinum
in the other plug P/N.....So, if the plugs are pulled, and
re-installed, it's important to put the plugs back into the same
bank that they came out of.....
Bob,

Did you mean to say in your first sentence that swapping the plugs from one bank to the other would extend life on double platinums? Otherwise I'm confused. That's interesting that they put two different parts into the motors. Oh well.

Hi Jim,

I guess I wasn't very clear. No, switching single platinum (only the
center electrode is platinum) will extend the plug life some.

I can see how you could eek a little more life out of the singles by swapping them. If you had them in correctly at first, and had worn down the platinum electrodes, you could now wear down the non-platinums. Or if you had installed one side correctly, and the other with the same single platinums, you could swap so that the ones that wore wrong are now on the correct side and wearing down the platinum while the originally correct ones will have their chance to wear down the non-platinum side.

I see what you are saying now. But you are saying that there would be no advantage to swapping the double plats, cause they don't wear much at all?

Yes, since both electrodes have double platinum, then both
electrodes are going to erode at the same rate (very little),
so there is no point in swapping them....

I don't know anymore. I spend sometime at a site that has a lot of Ford mechanics and they all say Autolites are crap and they are worse then Bosch.

Interesting. I just heard the same thing, myself. That's probably why so many people have had good luck putting Autolites in their Ford motors. I've been hanging around the the Ranger Forum for a while and like I said a lot of guys have installed the Autolite DP's in their 4.0Ls and have reported very good results.

For my Ford Ranger with the 3.0 L the manual recommends AFSF22PP. I bought these Motorcraft plugs at Autozone for a great buy thanks to your posts. Are these double platinum plugs? Just double checking... get it? "double"

I think you meant AGSF22PP, instead of AFSF22PP. Yes, they
are double platinum.

Thanks Bob, you are right. I did mean the AGSF22PP. Good to know for sure that these are the double platinum.

Quick question about plug installation: Do you guys ever put "never seize" or simply a few drops of oil on the new spark plug threads so they don't squeak so much upon installation? What do you think?...

Yes, a small amount of "anti seize" on the threads, and
dielectric grease inside of the spark plug boots.

Edge02Ranger4x4,

Yes you can put in the double platinums, and in fact, that is what Ford calls for when you replace the original factory plugs. One of the main reasons that double platinum plugs are recommended as replacements is so that they can be installed without worrying about mixing and matching...

P. S. Welcome to Ford truck Enthusiasts!
