Looking for a Truck
I keep up with the F150's because I would like to get one in the near future. Wondering how you guys are getting such good prices on these trucks. Is it just because I live in Phoenix and not some backwoods dealership? I am looking for a XLT Supercrew short bed 4x4 with the ecoboost. Wanting more of a gas mileage truck than a pulling truck. Will be for pulling the boat to the lake and city driving. Lake is 20 minutes away. I want low gearing for mileage.

I currently have a 20' Tahoe Runabout that is about 3200 lbs. and I will be buying a F150 to tow it...not to mention I want to get a TT later when the kids are all gone. I am looking at getting 3.73 gearing with the max tow for that reason. If you are looking to just tow your boat and have no plans on towing a TT the ecoboost with the 3.55 gearing would suit your needs. I am sure even 3.31 gearing would do the job as well. Both would do well on milage when not towing however gas milage is so subjective and there are too many factors that effect it.
The 5.0 would also do the job as well....I test drive it and was impressed with the power and also the great sound it has from the exhaust. Where I have not personally towed with either as of yet...I am sure someone will chime in and give your better towing result with their trucks.

I agree with PrinceValium.
I don't think the gearing makes that much of a difference - I am getting the advertised 16/21 mpg with my HD payload / max tow EB. You get maybe a mile per gallon better without these packages?
Does the trailer have hydraulic or electric brakes? The IBC that comes with the max tow package is great for electric brakes.
Your 19ft trailer and boat is probably 3K lbs or under - any configuration will do just fine with that. The question is if you'll be upgrading the boat, or will be getting a TT in the future. In either of those cases I'd get HD payload or max tow (or both )
I paid $35K for mine, XLT with HD payload, max tow, 4x4, screw, backup cam, all packages except Chrome.

I'm looking at my sales contract paperwork as I write this. I was on the "x plan" and paid $35.5K after $6500 of rebates. This does not include taxes or any service contracts or Simoniz coatings.
- 4x4 crew cab, 6.5' box
- Ecoboost, 3.73 gears, electronic locker, Max Tow
- All the special packages
- Additional extras were center console, keyless entry number pad, tailgate step, backup camera

Where I can agree with that it is not always true. I for one would have no problem saying exactly what I would pay for my truck in hopes of hepling someone else that is looking to buy. I am still looking...and hope I get a good deal.

Here is my exact number, looking at the sales contract: $35,097.50. MSRP was $42,985.
Here is what that price included:
- 4x4 EB screw 157" XLT
- 3.73 rear end
- HD payload package
- max trailer tow package
- XLT convenience package
- XLT plus package
- rear view camera
I did have a trade in, but that trade was negotiated separately, I first told them no trade, as mine was a special order. I brought the trade into the equation two months down the road, long after the paperwork for the truck was done and the order placed. I got exactly what kbb said for my trade, I would have otherwise sold it privately. So the $35,097.50 is the correct number.

For the OP, if you're accustomed to an older truck then I might warn you that the rear visibility of these newer trucks is much worse then what you might expect, and you might want the rear backup camera. The newer trucks have increased height of bed rails and tailgate, and there are head rests on rear seats that are placed right in line-of-sight at back window. I got the backup camera to help hook up a car trailer, but my appreciation for the camera in every day use has grown a lot since I got the truck home. My 2000 Superduty was much easier to back up with accuracy then this F150. Very glad I got the camera.

I have an 06 and have no problems backing it up or hooking the trailer. I use the sideview mirrors to back up and hook the trailer. The bed rails are the same height on the 06 as the new ones. I have considered getting an aftermarket camera to hook the trailer with, but I really haven't had any problem by just using the side mirrors.

I bought an XLT 4x4 with nothing heavy duty about it. Except for the ecoboost engine it's a base XLT. It's rated to pull 8200 lbs with the 3.31 axles. It retailed for just under 37K and I rolled out with it hovering around 30K.
It was built in Jan 2011 and I bought in June 2011. I think many folks were scared of the ecoboost and the axle ratios. It's what the doctor ordered for me.
I;m getting 19-20 mpg's empty in mixed driving and 24+ on open semi flat freeway. 22.5 in the steep hills.
All the attributes of a diesel without the maintenance.
