94 E350 ABS Light On

Hey guys,

The ABS light has been on for about 8 months on my van. I took it to the dealer and they said that in 94 only about 25000 vans were built with ABS and the parts are no longer available. I told them the light was driving me crazy and to just disconnect the light. The tech then told me that if they pulled the bulb, the on board computer would know an the door chime would continually go off until the bulb was replaced?!?! Have any of you heard of that? It sound like a load of BS to me. I tried to make the light go away by pulling the circuit breaker for the ABS and pulling the ABS relay but that had no effect. Assuming the door chime story is BS, how can i make the light go off without pulling the instrument cluster to remove the bulb?

Thanks,

Dave

I used to have a '94 van. When my ABS quit I pulled the bulb. No door chime. Pulling the instrument cluster is the best way to do it. It isn't that hard.

I used to pull the bulb from the instrument cluster also. Easy jobb on both my 94 and 95 vans.
No door chimes on either of them.

Parts are available, but very hard to find.

My 95 350 van, I disconnected the bulb and I got a buzzer.

In my case, the ABS light was on because of contamination on the rear diff sensor, and went away as soon as I cleaned it. If you need junkyard ABS parts, ALL Club Wagons had 3-channel ABS.

Kind of a old post, but Iv been wondering how to, and what happens when you disable the rear ABS on a 95 E350. Iv never driven a vehicle with abs in the back and after reading less than favorable reports, would like to disable it and continue my old school ways.

Do I simply unplug the vss from the D60 rear?

Im running a 5 speed manual.

Thanks

I know that the electronic speedometer needs at least one of these sensors to function. The rear sensor is the easiest to get hold of and replace.

I have recently replaced all three ABS sensors and my ABS brakes function perfectly. Parts are availlable again, since they are back in production.

I can also use the cruisecontrol again, as this needs all 3 to be in good working order to function.

On older models with only the rear sensor, you also need it to work, to get speedometer and cruisecontrol functions.

Some models with rear ABS only, also have a load dependent sensor, meaning that when you load more than 300 kg of cargo, the ABS brake is dissabled, but keeping speedo and cruise (It's possible to adjust that sensor arm, and ABS is dissabled).

Why not just unplugg it and see what happens. You never know until you try.

On a side note, our '93 E150 rear ABS warning light went from intermittent to always on. Speedo and cruise control work properly. Does this acquit a faulty rear sensor?

Thanks,
Sixto

I don't know for sure, I had the same problem on my old F-250. The speedo was wandering all over when driving and cruise didn't work (ABS light always on). Replaced the rear sensor and all was perfect.

Have you tried to clean the sensor and check the tone ring? A missing tooth on the tone ring can give various funny symptoms. You can also measure the resistance of the sensor, while it's out. 1500 Ohms is the resistance it should have.

I found the ABS brain box in my 99 e-250 near the center of the dash, had to pull the doghouse as I recall, just reached up and unplugged it, no more light! I had unplugged all the buzzers and crap way before then, so I don't know if it affected those or not. I used my workshop manual on cd that I bought to locate it, prob not the same in yours but "it's in there somewhere" keep lookin!
