I have read a ton of info on this build and cannot nail down the details. I am sure you guys have seen this quite a bit so I am hoping you can point me in the right direction.

I got a 56 F100 292 Yblock and I want to replace the current 3 speed with a more modern 3 speed from a 80's pickup. I have the yblock bellhousing from the 3 speed and all accessories.

I have read you need to cut up to 3/8" off this input shaft on this transmission to get it to work with the y block bellhousing but besides that it should bolt right together?

Questions:

Is the above thoughts accurate?
What bearing, clutch pressure plate do I use with this? I have all the stuff from the yblock and it is virtually brand new.
Anything I a missing?

Any links, builds or thought would be amazing. I am posting a pic of the transmission I am using.

The reason you cut off the input shaft is because it bottoms out in the pilot bearing on the Y-Block crank. Check before cutting.

I would use your original pressure plate and throw out bearing. Use a clutch disc that matches the spline on the new trans and the correct diameter for your pressure plate.

Is see you have duel bolt pattern on the trans so it should bolt up. Check the diameter of the front bearing housing to ensure it fits the hole in the bell.

Check trans length for drive shaft modification if needed.

Check Ford Barn or Y-Blocksforever. Someone on there may know have answers for you that I don't.

 

There is another easier option. Use a model 303 Ford toploader all synchro 3 speed transmission. They were available in the 63 and 64 F100/F250. I have info here somewhere on the Jeep floor shift that replaces the original 303 top plate. Takes a little work because the side trunions need to be removed. The Jeep shifter would be centered. Since the 303s were column shift a floor shifter adapter is needed if the Jeep conversion isnt made, and it ends up left of center in the floor.

the truck bell is deeper than the car one so you shouldnt need to grind any of the input shaft.at any rate measure.
