1969 F250 RANGER, RUNS STRONG...DIES
I HAVE A 1969 F250 WITH A 360 AND A C6 TRANS. I HAVE JUST REPAIRED MY FUEL TANK, IN CAB, AND NOTICED THAT THE PREVIOUS OWNER, BYPASSED WHAT I BELIEVE TO BE IS THE FUEL FILTER.
I HOOKED THE TANK BACK UP, IT RAN STRONG SEVERAL START UPS, TOOK IT UP THE ROAD TO GET SOME BEERS, DIED RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE HOUSE, WILL NOT CRANK BACK UP. CRANKED IT FOR A WHILE, BURNED THE BATTERY, TRIED TO JUMP IT OFF WITH MY PRIMARY VEHICLE, STILL WOULDNT CRANK.
THIS HAPPENS ALOT, WILL DRIVE SOMEWHERE AND THEN IT WILL DIE ON ME, LEAVE ME STRANDED FOR A WHILE, AND THEN START BACK UP HOURS LATER.
PLEASE HELP!!

Well there are only two fuel filters, a canister filter on the OEM fuel pump, and maybe a small inline filter at the carb...if someone else installed one. Sounds like some gunk is clogging the fuel pickup in the tank...which is why it will start and run for awhile, then die. It runs until the gunk plugs the intake sock. Or, the fuel pump is weak and drops out after awhile...you can check the pump by disconnecting the fuel line at the carb and putting it in a jar while someone else cranks it with the key...a good pump will flow enough to fill a jar pretty quick. Could also be the metal fuel line is too close to the engine block and the fuel is vaporizing in the hot line and starving the carb...which has to have liquid gas. So...check your filter at the pump, check fuel flow from pump to carb with the jar test, then find a way to insulate the metal fuel line from engine heat. Post back and let us know what you discover.

points, i am thinking about switching to electronic ignition. waited a few hours last night for it to cool off and went to try and crank it again, nothing. i feel like it is not getting the gas to start up, it tries to start, making the turning over noises, but just wont start up. i work at a Ford dealership service department, so i am going to get a few opinions from my techs. could the spark plugs be bad?

Had same problem with my 68 when i first got it , ended up being the coil it would fail after getting hot , drove me nuts trying to figure it out . check your wire to dizzy and to coil while your at it alot of time they are cracked good time to replace , i just spliced in new wire all the way to fire wall to be safe.

so, i let it sit all night, and all day, got home from work and tried to start her up. battery was dead from the day before. hooked it up to my turbo diesel jetta, still the same thing as before. tries to crank but just wont start up! i sprayed started fluid directly into the carb and tried to crank...nothing! i pulled the points ignition off nothing inside? pulled the actual plug top off of one, there was nothing inside? this is my first time dealing with a points ignition system so i dont quite know what im looking for but it just doesnt seem right!??
