Which one - 6.4 or 6.0

I can get a 2008 F250 4x4 XLT, 6.4 Super-cab, with 59k, for less than Wholesale, or I can get a 2006 F350 4x4 Lariat, 6.0 Super-cab, with 67k, for less than Wholesale.

After reading that the 6.4 and regen issues and the poor mpg, I don't know if this is a good choice or not, or am I just reading the bad stuff. Truck would be for towing 5th wheel, almost 100% highway driving since first stop sign is 98 miles away.

I had a 6.0 Excursion, with 134k, so I know that they can have problems too.

I'm so confused. Just asking for your experience with the 6.4l - Thanks in advance.

With your type of driving/usage, the 6.4 will serve you well. Regen is something to get used to. You probably won't get the MPG's that the 6.0 gets, but the 6.4 is a pulling machine. If you decide to tune & delete the DPF/DOC, you'll do even better. Seems that most of the problems associated with the 6.4 is DPF, or EGR related. Most of those problems are due to folks driving them in the city (stop & go, idling). It needs to get hot and it needs to be driven (not a lot of idling). Good luck on whichever you choose

What R-TOr21on said. The 6.4 is made to work. Regular towing and hauling and the 6.4is great. Mileage will only be off about 1 to 2 mpg's from the 6.0. Use it for a cruiser and it will be finicky. Keeping up with the fuel filter, WS draining and oil changing is also a MUST.
I had good luck with my 6.0's but for towing I would take the 6.4 anyday.

I would totally agree with what has been said. Long hauls and the hwy is where this motor shines and has the fewest of problems.

Getting used to the regen feature is all that is required. Get at least something like a scanguage II so you can monitor your vitals.

Stay away from the 6.0 liter. just make sure you change the oil at less than $5000 and maintain fuel filters etc. and the 6.4 will do just fine. I personally believe in removing the DPF not for power but the strategy it uses is to dump fuel into the oil during regen but thats just me.
