My dad's 292 in our 1960 F-250 sounds like it has an exhaust leak. We have replaced all of the gaskets and it hasn't got any better. Now we are wondering if the noise is coming from the open air cleaner. Pretty sure this engine came with an oil bath air cleaner but we dont have one to swap out to rule that out. Is anybody else running an open paper filter and hearing what sounds like an exhaust leak? Thanks
It looks like you've got duel exhaust on it, did you change the intake gaskets, as it could be comming from the cross over ports in the intake manifold.
Looking at the pic again, it looks like you do not have the crossover pipe in front of the motor like I thought. That thing always leaked on the F600 my dad had.
Has the performance changed since you started hearing the noise? If not, it's probably not the air cleaner or anything to do with the intake. Does it changes frequency along with the RPM's of the engine?
its sounded like an exhaust leak for as long as i can remember. i picked up a set of exhaust gaskets and replaced them. to my surprise it didnt have any exhaust manifold gaskets in it so i thought i found the problem. no luck. then i remember some old timer telling me flathead v8s dont sound right without an oilbath air cleaner. thats what got me thinking about air cleaners. i have never heard a y block breathing through an oil bath so i cant speak on the subject. i ordered a set of intake gaskets and will replace them soon. i am guessing that will solve the problem. time will tell, thanks for the heads up Fordgirl. after i read your post i got the manual out and there it was, exhaust gas is routed under the carb. learn something new everyday. and after looking at the new intake gaskets it seems like the ports are stacked on top of each other. unless i have the wrong gaskets.
Spur, the performance hasnt changed other than the secondaries opening now. its really only noticible at idle, when you step on the go pedal all the other noises cover up the leak. no radio, just loud exhaust and tire noise. and just so we dont confuse anyone, 63 flareside is my son, the one laying under the truck in my avatar.
