7.3 traded for a 6.4 :) (With Pic)

Well I finally taked myself into trading in my 97 7.3l diesel for an 08 king ranch 6.4 This four door long bed truck is quite an upgrade from my extended cab dually. I hope this thing will like when I hook up my 24' enclosed car hauler.
Just wanted to see if I made a good trade. The 97 had 49000 miles. The 08 has 80000. Hope I did ok.

Go thru all the maintance and read the manuals. Follow the severe duty maintance schedule.

Emissions stuff take a bit of getting used to but that is about it.

It will pull that car hauler like it is not even there.

If you like your truck now you'll LOVE it when you hook up to your car hauler! The 7.3L is a venerable old beast but is nowhere near as powerful as the 6.4L is at stock power levels. If you're into tuning for more power, HOLD ON!

Awesome guys thanks for the heads up on the maintenance. I like to consider myself pretty
Picky when it comes to taking care of trucks. Ive been trying to find out more info on the Regens these trucks do. Also what does he truck feel like while driving and it goes into this mode. I will post pics when I get back to a computer this weekend, can't post pics from my phone.

The regen..or cleaning exhaust filter should be pretty much seamless transition for your driving.

What happens is periodically the DPF gets full of soot. Sensors tell the PCM to clean it.

The cleaning is unfortunately completed by sending raw fuel on the exhaust stroke to the dpf where it is superheated enough to burn off the soot.

This cycle and its length between cleaning will vary with your driving conditions and fuel quality.

Ok. That's kinda what the salesman told me. I drove a similar truck the other day and I assumed it was in one of those cycles and it almost wouldn't get out of its own way. Is there a light on the dash that indicates this? Thanks again guys.

When it goes into regen, you'll get a brief message on the console stating, "Cleaning Exhaust Filter". If you have the latest flash on your truck the message only displays for a few seconds then goes away. You can scroll through the system check to see if the regen has finished but you can usually tell when it's finished (most of the time anyway). When my truck is in regen, the motor has a different sound to it and when I'm in stop and go traffic the throttle feels different, but if I'm cruising at 1800rpm it's very difficult to tell a regen is in process. I like to reset my trip B between regens to keep track of how often my truck goes into regen, which for me is about every 350 miles.

Ok. Thanks for the info. If you do the DPF delete does it do any harm to the engine? I assume you have to have a programmer of something to tell the comp not to run the cycle?

Everything I've read, is its better in the long run for your engine. No regens means no making oil, a little better fuel economy, no more excessive heat through the turbos, better performance. You could void the remainder of your warranty and you'll need to make sure there's no echeck. Yes you will need a tuner to disable the regen process. There's a lot of info here about it and you'll get a lot of different opinions about tuners. The most common are Spartan and H&S.

I just tuned and deleted my truck, It makes a world of a difference. The Regen process altogether is bad for your truck. examples are recirculated exaust gas going through your engine intake manifold, the mysterious making oil (diesel being introduced to your oil), and the DPF is like a huge catylitic converter which restricts the motor and boost engine temps. If you were intrested in tuning your truck you would not be disappointed, the 6.4L is Great motor for tuning. Also removing DPF,EGR (most tuners turn the EGR off) will boost your MPG, Which is the only bad thing IMO about the 6.4L. On a final note the 6.4L pulls like a freight train.

Nice. I would like to delete the DPF, but I still have an extended warrenty left on it. I will probly wait untill it goes out to much changing to it. I did hook up my 24' enclosed car hauler to it and took it up a few hills. It is fully loaded with our house furnishings since we are moving, and let me tell you.....Wow. So I knew there would be a big difference, but dang. I topped one of the hills near our house at 60 and I was just playing around. We can say my wife and I are thouroghly impressed and happy as clams.
