Hi all. I have a question on the proper flexplate and starter selection for my engine and tranny combo. I am using a 1966 289 - which is in getting rebuilt as we speak - and I want to bolt up to an AOD from a 91 T bird. The original flexplatel from the 289 will not bolt to the torque converter on the AOD which means I will need to get one that fits this tranny but what about the starter. The reason for my question is that while looking thru the Jegs catalog I see 164 tooth or 157 tooth flexplates and now I don't know what I need. Could someone explain how to figure out if my original starter will mate with a stock T Bird flexplate or if I need to install something else? Thank you

I installed a AOD in my mustang which has a 302, You can buy a flexplate from NAPA for a 351 W which has 164 teeth and 28 oz balance much cheeper than a kit from a vender, I would think. The starter is the same if I remember correctly, or just get a remaned one for the same model 351 w at NAPA. I think I have all the part numbers tucked away for what I did if needed but it might take me some time to figure out where i put them ???
Also you will need a transmission cross member, I made one for my application, if you have a welder and a few simple tools it's not hard to fab one up.

Rick's got it. Unfortunately, the 28 oz. 164-tooth plate is a rare specimen in the wild. I think the only factory application that used it was the 351W-powered Crown Vic or Grand Marquis. It's inexpensive and easy to get from the aftermarket, though. This is the one you need:

I've used that plate from that vendor previously ad it's a nice piece. $36 CHEAP!

 

Excellent and the prices are right too. After I posted this thread I did some more searching on here. I changed a few words and found some new stuff. One thing I found was a statement that suggested the flexplate from a 351 C4 combo would work too as the 351 stayed with the 28 oz 164 tooth plate. Does anyone have any info on this. I'm going to buy the new one I just wanted to be clear on this 351 c4 thing. Thanks Remi

 

Shoot I forgot to ask about the harmonic balancer. I am going to change mine because the old one is starting to crack up pretty bad. I am guessing you need to match it up to the 28 oz balance of the flexplate some how am I correct? Thanks Remi

 

I had the a simular problem when I resurched my 93 AOD to my 68 289. When I go my motor it had the wrong flex plate. I had to find which one I needed.

Up to 1970 the harmonic balancer had 3 bolt for the pulley, after it changed to 4.

up to 1982 the weights were 28oz then in 1982 changed to 50oz Balancers and flexplate. Make sure they match or very bad thing will happen.

A 162 tooth flex plate for a 1980 351W is the ticket from O'Rieleys with a matching starter ( less core ). All about a couple of Jacksons.

 

My AOD came out of a 91 T Bird SC with a 3.8 L super charged motor. Does anyone know if the T Bird starter will work since it bolts to the tranny. The original starter bolt pattern from the 289 starter is to wide to fit the AOD. What I am asking is if the T Bird starter is tough enough to turn the 289.

 

I have a 65 289/aod and if i remember right i used the aod flywheel and a small starter to clear the headers.

 

i used a crown vic. starter on my 289. no troubles

 

Then I will try the T Bird starter then. If it don't work I can change it out.... Excellent. Thanks everyone. That deals with the flexplate, the starter and the harmonic balancer. The motor will be ready by the middle of June. By then the front end will be installed and I should be able to mock up the motor and tranny to where the crossmembers and motormounts will need to be fabbed. The goal is to have it running by the end of the year. That will leave the bodywork and paint for next year.

Except that he can't use the '82+ flywheel on his '66 289 due to the imbalance issue. Do you have another number for a 164T flexplate with the 28oz imbalance that would work in this application?
