OIl change costs question

I'm due for the first oil change and started figuring the parts up. Sounds like:

$22 oil filter
~$25/gallon for oil X 4

$122 plus tax +$132

Dealer does it for $149 including tire rotation. I have the tools and ability, but man...if I put any value at all on my time I have to think it's better just to drop it off and pick it up 2 hours later all ready to go. I know the mechanic that will do the work and he's top notch so no worries there.

What do you guys think?

Your time...your money. Which do you value more and how much do you enjoy dirty fingernails?

One of the nice things about having the dealer do it is the recovery of the old oil is done right there and while he's in there, the tech might see something else unrelated to the lube you may miss and can bring it to your attention.

Right...I probably should have asked if my prices for parts were reasonable also.

thanks!

You only need 3 gallons and 1 qt of oil. You prices seem pretty close but if your considering doing your own oil changes you can get FoMoCo filters online for around $12.
I like you prefer to do my own maintenace, allows me to spend some quality time with the truck!!

Motorcraft oil filter = $11.95
Motorcraft 10/30 oil = $69.76
Total = $81.71

Local Dealer charges $130+tax.

In the two hours I would sit and wait at the dealer, I could have easily done the oil change myself and had extra time left over.

If you aren't worried about the extra dollars and have the extra time to wait, then I would have the dealer do it.
If I had both I would have the dealer do it for me.

Where are you buying the filters and oil?

Semi synthetic oil?

I can drop it in the AM and pick it up after work so the time isn't an issue unless I do it myself.

Thanks!

I have not gotten close to my first oil change yet but I will let the dealer do a full synthetic change. They rotate the tires, check / fill fluids, and fill the DEF tank. I plan to let them also change the fuel filters every other oil change too.

My dealer has a great oil change setup and will provide a rental car when I have the fuel filters changed. I can drop off my truck before work and pick it up in the evening.

right.. I let the dealer do it.. for $92+tax last time.
I take it in at 7-8am, they drive me home (20 miles one way), and pick me up
later when its ready.
I pay and drive out.. its almost always sitting in the service entrance facing out to get in and drive..

Filters (fuel & oil) = Ford 6.7 liter Powerstroke Turbo Diesel Truck Filters - Diesel Filters,Additives, brake rotors, and brake pads for Chevy, Dodge and Ford Diesel Trucks
I bought in bulk as the shipping was a flat rate.

I am running the regular Motorcraft 10/30 oil for diesel engines that it says to run in our manual.

Sounds like you are better off letting someone else change it for you.
For the added $$ you don't have to mess with it.

I can't find the dino oil around here which is why my oil cost estimates are so much higher than yours. Do you buy it locally or have it shipped?

thanks

I have found my local Wally World has the best pricing on oil, both Dino and Syntehtic.
My trucks have prefered the Rotella T flavor so thats what I use.
Use the link my996duc1 provided for all your filter needs and save a bundle!

Local Ford Dealer carries it here.
They told me if they did the oil change that is exactly what they would use, as directed by the truck's manual.

A synthetic oil change is $240 here, huge difference.

WalMart has the best prices around here too, but very limited choices.
I have heard some of them carry DEF too, but the local one doesn't.

The used truck dealership that I bought my truck from (not a Ford dealership, independent HUGE dealership) charges $73 for Motorcraft filter, Rotella T3 dinosaur juice and oil disposal with an appt for 6.0, 6.4 and 6.7 liter Powerstrokes. If I wasn't such a control freak it would be cheaper to let them do it than myself.
