Ok I see what you guys mean now, I have the transmission in my garage still so I can take a look in....sorry for all the trouble and headaches guys. Like I said this is a lot of new stuff at once but I'm learning a lot on here and bringing a 83 back to life

 

No problem. I'm having my own speedo issues. I can't even get the drive gear off my transmission to replace it. I just drive by tach for now. 2500rpm = ~55mph

Since you have the transmission out you probably won't have to take the tailshaft out. Just look in the hole and count the teeth.

 

Hey atleast you have the tach, mine doesn't.... Will be adding one at some point once I get back to the interior stuff....i will take a look at it when I get over to the garage and see what I can find out

 

I had to add an aftermarket. The factory tach that I took out of another truck doesn't work quite right. Let us know what you find when you look at the gear on the transmission.

If there is anything stamped on the back of the speedo unit, it will require disassembling the cluster to read it. Just looked at the spare cluster I have, and only the shaft where the cable attaches is visible, without removing it from the housing.

 

I have one at home as well (actually 3). I'll tear it apart and take a look. Not that hard to disassemble.

I don't know if this helps at all. There were no other numbers or anything clear that says how many revolutions at 60mph.

 

So was finally able to get to the garage last night and check out the transmission.....it was hard to see through the little hole but between my brother in law and me we think there is 8 teeth on it, does that seem like a likely number for the AOD trans?

I have no clue, as I never messed with an AOD trans. It sounds plausible though.

 

I know i had to put in a white 17 teeth gear but i have 33's

 

I think the standard is 1000 RPMs at 60mph. That's what I figured using that calculator and my speedo is finally working correctly. So, if you use that calculator figuring in your transmission gears, tire size and differential you'll get to where you need to be.
