F-Superduty wheels and axle swap options
Hey fellas,
It's been a while!
The 85 F350 has left the fleet. I got sick of patching it together....so there's now a 96 F350 4x4 pickup with a 208k mile Stroke, E4OD, and Dana 60 sitting in the driveway. Everything I said I would never own....I now own
But, I'm back to working on the F-Superduty dump truck...and wondering about axle options....
It's a 1991 F-Superduty with a 7.3/ZF5/2wd with a 12' dump on it. I'd like to end up with a maximum capacity 4x4 rig.
Considering the truck probably weighs 8k pounds, with a 6k pound load, plus towing a 8k pound trailer puts me around 22k pounds.
So I've been thinking that maybe some F550 Superduty axles might be the way to go so I can have some 17.5 or 19.5 wheels with some F or G load range tires.
I'd prefer to stick with a kingpin D60 and 10.25 dually axle, but I don't think there are too many heavy duty 8 lug wheel/tire combinations that would work. Anyone else have an opinion about that? I know there are some members who installed a 60/10.25 combo back in the day and worked fine.
Has anyone put much thought into Supeduty axles recently? The Superduty D60/D135 combo sounds pretty good!
How was everyone been!?

Personally, i think the current axles in there would do the trick. You can buy 8on 6.5" 17.5 wheels. We have some on our 93 that is our all around ranch / work / fire truck. I forget the exact size but the tired some out to 10" x 33.5" $600 got us the wheels and fresh caps. That is for a SRW tho, but im sure they make them offset as well.
We went to them to get the 14plys to avoid flats, that big **** water tank didnt really get along with E's very well either.

I apologize for the confusion! I'm talking about the F-Superduty 2wd truck....not the 96 F350. I edited the original post, because it wasn't very specific at all.
8 x 6.5" 17.5" wheels....hmm....now that sounds like a good combo! I wouldn't hesitate to run a 60/10.25 combo with some 17.5" tires. Thanks buddy, sounds like a good option.

I'm also doing a 4x4 conversion on an F-Superduty. The stock D80 axle is plenty stout, and I like the rear discs, but the lack of an E-brake on the axle is an issue. The stock driveline brake works well (on mine...), but I'll lose that with a transfer case install. I'm looking at making an adapter to put the driveline brake on the back of the T-case.
I'm putting a D60 in the front, which brings up another issue: It's nearly impossible to get 10 lug hubs for a D60 that match the pattern on the D80 rear. I'll probably run 8 lugs on the front until I can find/make them.
The F-550 axles sound great. I just can't afford that option.
