Did the 88's come with C-6 automatic trannys behind the 302

Hey I'm in the middle of buying a 1988 F-150 with a 302 and a automatic tranny. I didn't get a good look at the tranny due to the ankle deep mud and crap around the truck. It seemed that the truck had D 2 1 which I think means its a c-6. Did the c-6 come in 1988 fords behind the 302? Or is there a switch somewhere like on the shifter that can be pushed to activate the overdrive? If it is a c-6 (keep in mind I couldn't check the pan) the pan shoul be lik a P right? What kind of gas mileage can be expected from a fuel injected 302 and a c-6? Thanks guys

Mine has an AOD. I think all the 150's of that year came with the 302/AOD or the 351/? and the 250-350's that had the 460/C-6 setup. I don't know which the 351 came with so you may be looking at a 351 with a C-6. I'm not positive but this could be. My tranny pan is a square with the two rear corners slightly cut inwards. The middle of the pan has a pyramid shape extrusion from the center of the pan which is the filter pickup sump.
I'd wash it off to see what I'm buying if I were you. Don't trust friends either. I bought mine from a friend who said it needed an O2 sensor replaced. I am now in the middle of replacing the real culprit of the poor running problem, the heads. It dropped a valve, He knew. Good luck!

Did the 88's come with C-6 automatic trannys behind the 302

I'm not sure about Ford offering the C-6 behind the 302 in the '88 models,but I can say that they did for the 1989& 1990 models.I looked it up in the 1989 & 1990 Ford Light Trucks Facts Albums.The 302/C-6 combination was available.Factory ordering codes were 99N/44G : 302/C-6.My guess is the 1988 models were also available with the 302/C-6 combination.The 351s were strictly fitted with the C-6,until the 1990 models.Hope this helps.

Assuming the Drivers side door is original.
On the back of the drivers door is a sticker.
K=C6
T=AOD

You can tell engine size by the VIN number.
8th Digit from the left
Y=4.9
N=5.0
H=5.8
G=7.5
M=7.3

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Sep-02 AT 04:18 PM (EST)]'K' is the tranny code listed for the C-6 in Bronco,F-150,F-250,F-250HD,and F-350 lines,but 'G'is the code for a C-6 in Econoline series.For some reason Ford chose to make the factory option code for 302/C-6 in all vehicles it was available in 99N/44G.You'd think it would be 99N/44K,but it wasn't.I wonder why the option codes were listed this way?That code is the code a salesperson would use when ordering different options on a vehicle.99N=302 44G=C-6,but your F-150,if it has a C-6, will have a 'K' for the trans code listed on the door tag label.The AOD didn't have a cancel switch to lock out overdrive,that would be the E4OD which wasn't available until 1989 in heavy-duty applications,and 1990 across the entire line.

If the shifter had D 1 2 then the truck you're looking at has a C6. The C6 doesn't have overdrive on it.
