Tires

What stock size tires are you guys running? When I say stock I mean 265 75 16. Mine is a 2004 Limited 4 x 4 6.0L and in the market for new tires but not sure what to do. Used mostly as a daily driver but we do tow a 7,000 TT a few times a year. I am wanting to know what tires have run the best for you guys.
I know that the Michelin's are ranked pretty high but I have been looking at the E Range Cooper Discoverer H/T.
I am not looking to get an aggressive tire but something that will last fairly decently since they are not cheap to replace.

Thanks for the input.

Running Michelin M/S 2 for the last few months. Quiet and don't seem to be wearing any at all. The last M/S that I ran got 95,000 miles out of them. They might be a little expensive but I've never gotten that kind of millage out of any tire. E rated.

Another vote for Michelin here!
I run the Michelin AT2 on my F250. Great tire, I tow 7-9k a few times a year, sometimes in the woods traction is an issue which is why I went to the AT2. I have 26k on these tires now and they are just starting to show a bit of wear. If the wear pattern is linear for the remainder of the tire life we should be able to get about 70k out of these tires, maybe more.

They do cost a bit more but they are worth it! I found this set on sale from NTB and had a local shop price match. It has been a couple of years but with the Michelin rebate I ended up getting into these for just over $900.

When I get the opportunity to upgrade the tires on the Excursion I will look at the Michelin MS as it sees more paved roads.

Cheers

Another Michelin LTX fan here. Just took the Pirelli Scorpions off because they were only D rated. That is another highly rated tire. They were wearing great, but I just don't like oversized tires (285's).

Good Year Wrangler Silent Armour. I have 75,000 miles on my load range Es on my X, wife's Jeep had a flat on the freeway at 65MPH last month, thought it was toast after driving on the flat at that speed, but the tire was able to be fixed and has had no issues since! Also the best winter weather tire I have ever owned! After the flat on the wife's Jeep, I'll never get a diferent tire!

Just replaced a set of Coopers with Michelin LTX ms2's. Should of replaced the Coopers 2 yrs ago the way the Michelins ride.

I love them....I have had 4 sets of Michelins, 2 sets on a 91 explorer, 1 set on a 99 explorer and I currently have them on my 2003 class c motorhome. Got around 95,000 miles out of the sets on the explorers. Put them on the Ex and love the way they ride.

In 179k miles that I have owned my X, my favorite tire is the Firestone Transforce A/T. First set of factory's(SteelTex) was replaced at 52k by Firestone during the big recall. that set lasted 60k. Then put on a set of BFG Rugged Trail's from a buddy's new F350. Lasted 40k. My new Transforce tires have almost 30k and have 1/2 tread remaining. I love the way they wear. No cupping on any of the Firestones. Good luck in your search.

All top of the line tires mentioned so far!
I'll just add to the Goodyear Silent Armor camp. Very quiet, good on-road manners, no squishiness while towing heavy with high tongue weights, great in the snow (in years when we actually have a winter....) and good tread wear.

Thanks for all of the replies. I have been given even more tires to research!! Thanks a lot.....

I am leaning toward the Michelins but still looking. I know it's only tires but I don't want to buy them very often....unlike some of the other guys on this forum, I don't have a ton of money just laying around waiting to throw at my Excursion. Fortunately for me it has been a great vehicle so far.

Thanks again guys.

The Michelins last forever but have the worst traction of any tire I've ever owned - especially past 1/2 life.

I'm running E-rated Nitto Dura-Grapplers on the X now. Awesome tires. These are 285's, but they make a 265/75/16E...

One more reason to like the Firestone's...$600 out the door around here. Of course that was 2 years ago when I bought them. Probably a little cheaper now.

I'd get the michelins if the cost isn't much of an issue. The two sets of michelins we had on our trucks were my most favorite tire out of all of them! The coopers we have now aren't to bad and wouldn't mind having on my own vehicles. I got the firestone transforce HT for my X because they were a decent price and they are fine. The sidewall just isn't as strong as I like. They do ride nice and are quiet.

When it comes to tires don't be too frugal.

Michelin or Goodyears. I'm using up the last of my Coopers now and look forward to going back to the Michelins.

Ditto. Another Michelin fan. I had two (2) sets on my 2003 (LTX) and now have a set on my 2005. I also tow heavy and never worry about these tires. At about 50K on these tires, they still look good.
