shudder shimy and shake

Recently I went a little crazy in a mud hole near my house. My truck might not have been quite prepared for this but you gotta have fun sometimes right? So ever since then I have had a terrible shake in second gear (I almost never use first) when taking off from a stop. I can play with the gas and clutch a bit to reduce it but its pretty bad. Also ever since I replaced ball joints and steering arms and got aligned and balanced it shakes on the freeway. Not from the wheels but from either shocks or drive line. The cross member between the trans and t-casehas two big rubber prices with bolts going through them and seems loose. Any suggestions? BTW its 84 f250 4x4 5.8L t-18 4spd

Hard to diagnose from just a statement "it shakes".

But you said you think it may be in the driveline and now you have issues in 2nd...and you sound like you have issues with your mounts not being tight.

I think I would start there. Jack up the tranny/transfer case and pull the mount out and inspect it to see if it's damaged. Replace if needed and tighten it down. This is what holds it all tight to the frame...if it's not tight, it will shake around.

Start there and see what it does.

BTW...depending on how deep you got it in the mud...you may want to check your differential and transmission oils. Your differentials are vented to atmosphere. If you got it too deep and covered the vent up with mud, you cold have mud/water in there!!

I will definitely be checking the gear oil in the diffs and in the transmission itself. What is the name of the big rubber bumper between the transmission mount and the cross member? Does it come with the replacement mount? I want to change that piece and get it all tightened up but I don't know the name and my local auto parts guys are not too much help.

I think ultimately yes, that is what I'm looking for. It looks to me like a PO had fabricated their own tranny mount and used body mounting bushings to soften it. I am going to try to look up the vin with a Ford dealer and see if any special equipmen came from the factory, but it looks like the part you showed me (same as all the stores around here) will bolt right up to it.

Ford part # should be

E3TZ-7A033-A

If you type that into Google you will find several ford dealers that have it in stock

So I'm assuming this would cause major shaking and wobbling on take off and intermittent highway shake? I'm going to replace it anyway, but I hope its the solution to this current problem.

I would certainly think it could yes...don't know if that is for sure your problem but if it's tore up and loose it can't be good. They are certainly cheap enough....so replace it and let's see where that gets you.

Will at the very least eliminate it as a possible problem and we go after what's next.

You don't have any issues getting it off the line? If there was an issue with getting gunk up in your clutch I would think this would be most evident at first roll

The clutch feels as solid as ever like it engages with zero slip. Its just that first car length off the line that feels like the whole truck is jumping up and down a bit. Actually if I let off the clutch slower it doesn't happen so much but that will just tear up the clutch if I release it too slowly every time. There may or may not have been some mud near the clutch itself but I've done 3 days of stop and go commuting so I feel like the plate would have rubbed clean from all the friction.

Kevin, thanks for all the help today. I will be tinkering with the truck all weekend and will give you results after my first official test drive into the city for work Monday. On a side note, I love your truck. Mine was originally given a 460 from the factory and I plan to give it another one in the future.

How much did you slip the clutch while you were playing?

Could've burned up the clutch. You might need to have a resurfacing job done. High and low spots can cause bouncing from takeoff where the clutch is catching and releasing as it turns. You could also just have a new clutch put in.

Shaking at highway speeds could be U-joints or a tire out of balance.

You may have gotten the driveshaft out of balance or bent just a little bit. If you can get access to a lift you can put the truck into gear and watch the driveline to see exactly what is going on. I had this happen on my truck as well. Started shaking at a certain speed but would "get better" at a higher speed. Just a thought.

I believe you might be right about the drive shaft. It has been a lot better since I did the transmission mount, but still a little jumpy off the line and a steady vibration at higher speeds. I definitely need shocks as well, but the vibration feels more centered under and behind me and I can feel the variations with the gas pedal. This might sound strange, but its hard to describe what you feel in the driver's seat. Anyway back to the drawing board and back to work to add to the funds. Thanks for the input.

So I got a quick update. I researched my 2150 2bbl Carb some more because I was running really rough. Turns out I had the intake way out of balance. One side was getting way more gas and air. I tuned the Carb and it smoothed out 10x. Still bumpy but I know that's 28yr old shocks crying for retirement. Thanks again for the help and anyone with a vibration or shaking problem in the future can hopefully get help from this thread.
