do any of yall have air compressors in your truck?

hey yall,

i drive on the beach about 100 miles south of me about 3-4 times a season and you really have to drop pressure in the tires. i have seen in picknpull a truck had a 12v compressor hard wired in. does anyone here have on or have recomendations on what to do? i plan on mounting on the d/s fenderwell. thanks,

john

Awesome idea, and I don't even off-road. I would love to do this just for emergency uses.

The best part about the York compressor is it was actually available on the engines we have in our trucks, so with a little yard searching you can find complete bolt-on bracketry.
I picked up a compressor and brackets a while back for an eventual onboard air project, for emergency tool usage as well as air horns.

That's my plan as well, I have one sitting on a 400 in a '77 Thunder Turd waiting to go on my truck.

351, can't thank you enough for that link. Also stumbled onto a couple good articles and threads on this site if anyone needs links. I wondered if you had time to answer a couple ?'s

It seems that these units, when used as air comps, can not be used for A/C at the same time? So one would need two compressors for both?

And, is it necessary to have an air tank? Can a line be run directly for a tire line, or pneumatic wrench, with the proper pressure valves?

You do need a seperate A/C compressor, as for air tools, I would assume you will need a tank, I'm not sure what the cfm rating is on these compressors. Even just with a line for filling tires without a tank you should have the pressure switch though.

Shocked to see somebody else still up around here, hah. Many thanks for the pro tips. Guess it makes sense you'd need a buildup tank for the volume of air to run something like a wrench.

Not much of a pro over here, just trying to help. If anyone's trucks are running a serpentine belt and has a/c bronco air.com(I think) is another site to look at.

I've never heard of this, but glad it's an option. What trucks were these available on? I don't run A/C so I would just use the compressor as a compressor.

My uncle Lee's 81 f100 had a power generator under the hood tbat he used to operate powered hand tools like drills, circular saws and even work lamps but I never heard of this before. That was an interesting read and being the type of person who likes to be fully prepared when making long trips I might l consider installing a generator and air compressor just in case im stranded out of cell range and need to make emergency repairs. I just wish my uncle lee still had his old 81 with the generator because i would buy it from him. He was a carpenter by the way lol

There are also underhood arc welders available. I passed on one at the wrecking yard last summer under the hood of an '83 F150.

It depends on how much you want to spend, Viair seems decent but the 15% duty cycle kinda turns me off (mentions a 6min run time) I would be looking at the 400 series as they are 100% duty cycle but thats just me, its all about your intended use.

I have an ARB air locker differential. I put an air hose fitting on the air pump so it can be used to pump tires.

You can buy the pumps without the locker.

The basic model can pump a tire in a few min..... The Twin model can run air tools but is kinda pricey.
Compressors on ARB web site: Compressors
