Did you look at the truck?? I would go with the 300 long before the 302. I drive an 88 f150 with the 300 and it is awesome! I can get 18 mpg (good summer fuel and keeping it under 1800 rpms, which the 300 will love), and it has tons of torque. They run forever and will last longer than most of us will. The 300 is a true truck engine, and it will do 80 mph just fine. I wouldnt say it is any less "peppy" than a 302. I would reckon I can say that because my dad drove an 86 f150 with a 302 when I first got my f150 with the 300, and I kept up with him or did a little better. The 302 was not a good truck application engine. Shorty stroke and high revving.. Great car engine, in fact, a wonderful car engine, but a bit under powered for trucks. Get the 300, and you won't be disappointed.

I forgot to say as well, My dad's 86 f150with the 302 sucked mileage bad, just because it had to be overworked to make power. Towed a jetski and had stuff in the bed and it go around 10 mpg doing freeway speeds. In my f150 with the 300, when we moved, it was loaded to the gills (no jetski trailer though) and I was getting 16.5 at freeway speeds

Both are good motors but IMO the 300 is a better for a truck. also since you will be using it as a commuter there is an added benefit to the low end torque of the 300. I had a '92 F150 4x4 extended cab 5 speed with 247k miles on it and one of the things i loved the most was being able to from 60 to 70 on the freeway without having to drop a gear.
