I am assembling my flathead V8 and am trying to assemble the crank/cam gearing. I have no match marks on either gear and there are no marks on the pulley other than a small bump about 45° from the pointer and #1 piston @ TDC.

If someone could provide me with the firing order then I could figure out the crank/cam gear relationship but I am still wondering about the timing marks on the pulley.

Any help would be appreciated.

Don't go by the bump! it is at a strange angle, because the pointer is also, and it isn't TDC, it's 2 deg. BTDC.

Are you using the fiber cam gear? Are you sure it isn't flipped over?

Thanks Ross for responding. No I am not using the fiber gear but the aluminum. Figuring out the cam/crank relationship is not difficult. All I have to do is rotate the engine 'till #1 is 2 TDC, then rotate the cam 'till #6 is in the overlap position and then install the cam gear.

I have inspected both sides of the cam gear and there are no marks and there are no marks on the crank gear.

There are also no marks on the belt pulley to set up my distributor. Maybe I'll have to do it by ear. If I will be making my own marks on the pulley then I will mark TDC in the appropriate place. Maybe I can come up with a degree wheel for this engine.

Maybe this will help, mine is clearly marked (groove on rim, it is dead center of the spoke). Also a printable degree wheel...
