Fuel gauge problems, Help!!!!

I recently bought a 04 f150 4door lariat 4x4 5.4l. when i bought it the fuel guage didnt work, I figured it was something simple. Turns out so far I was wrong! Ive replaced the the fuel pump assembly and while doin that I noticed what I thought was the culprit. A broken wire on the plug goin to the fuel pump. Fixed that, and still no luck with the gauge! When I reset the pcm by disconnecting the battery I get a little response out of the gauge, but it doesnt read correct and only last a second before it drops out to nothing. I guessing Im gonna have to replace the cluster but I was hoping for a little feed back before i did since I did just waste $350 on a fuel pump assembly that didnt help anything other than ruling that out. I would really appreciate any comments/suggestions I can get. Thanks

On an '04 you haven't wasted money replacing the fuel pump assembly. It sounds like it could be a gauge problem. I would check out a Ford shop manual for 04-08 trucks from your library if they have one and follow the diagnostic routine for the symptom. That method hasn't failed me yet and it really saves a lot of time and money. With the cost of parts in this day and age I want to know what's defective before I start replacing things.
