My 4x4 gets about 14-16 with stock tires with non economical driving
10-12 with aggressive offroad tires.

My 4wd gets 13+mpg avg overall with a mix of driving. Runs a tune, and a slightly taller tire.

MPG

Can't speak to the crew cab but I can speak to the SCab 4x2.
97 Scab, 4.6 with 3.55 rear - around 15 mpg in town & 18-19 hwy
07 Scab 5.4 with 4.10 rear - around 15 in town and about 19 hwy, best of 20.6 mpg. This one's the Heavy Half.

Both are stock except for adding alloy rims to the 07.

Other than the weight of the t-case and front axle, the 4wd in these trucks doesn't really affect MPG's.

The front axle is non-rotating when driving

as for MPG's...with the 5.4 3v, the driver is the biggest single factor. Other things like big tires and lots of crap in the bed don't help either.

I had a SuperCrew FX4 with 3.73's, leveled out on 32's. On the highway for trips it got 19-21 mpg easily at 60-65 mph with the cruise control set.

around town and mixed driving...not so much. I'm an aggressive driver. Mixed MPG was 15-17 mpg...dipped to 14 mpg

if you have the option between 4x2 or 4x4, I really suggest you get the 4x4. They are handy when needed, and just plain ol' nice to have IMO.

Well the transfer case is always turning... You have an extra 400 pounds. On a dyno a 4x4 will have 40 less HP than a 4x2.
It makes a huge differance. My best friends has the exact same truck as me but a 4x2 nothing about the way they drive is the same.

Dyno is about 15 HP less than a 4x2

Only input shaft to rear output shaft spins inside t-case. All other internals are stationary unless in 4x4

It's there, but not huge. I'd put money on the difference you feel between buds truck and yours is the adaptive trans crap.

I've driven quite a few of the 04-08 F150. There is no noticeable drive differences between them except for hieght diff between 4x2 and 4x4
