Flywheel mystery

Does anyone know why I cant use the flywheel off my 300 six when I replace the engine with a 302? the bellhousing is the same and looks like it will fit but I was told I will need to replace it. Will the clutch work from the 6 on the 8? anything else I need to know ? thanks blue oval fans.

Your 300 six is internally balanced and the 302 is externally balanced. Depending on what year 302 it is will determine what flywheel it should have. 1968-1980 uses the 28 oz imbalance and 1981 and later uses the 50 oz imbalance. Using the wrong flywheel will cause serious vibration and ultimately damage to your engine. Use the correct flywheel and harmonic balancer for your 302 and save yourself a headache.
