replacing exhaust manifold

Anyone try this on the 5.4l? Is it as ugly to do as it looks?

Repair shops wants $650ish to replace the one side... I typically won't touch exhaust manifolds because they can be corroded on and I have a fear of snapping a bolt.

Looking for some insight here.

It's actually worse than that. Usually the studs are broken or will break in removal. The bad part is you can't get to them. If you bring it to a shop make sure they know what they're in for.

Pete is right. The fasteners are the worst nightmare of the whole job. And none of it is easy. You almost have to be a contortionist to even reach things. And steel fasteners in an aluminum head just don't work great for bolt removal. It might help if the bolts were larger. But it is what it is: a nightmare.

I looked at it for a while today. I was trying to figure out how the hell to even get in there without lifting the engine.

I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and take it in. I hope this is just a fluke and not normal to develope exhaust leaks.

so be it.

It's fairly common on the mod-motered trucks. I don't think it's as common as the early to mid 90's trucks were, though. Ford Racing has a nice looking ceramic coated shorty header that's reasonably priced. If I have to replace any exhaust manifolds on my 06 5.4L it's definately going to get some stainless ceramic coated shorty headers. They won't crack like the exhaust manifolds do after a lot of heat cycles and high EG temps. The last time I checked they cost around $300 a pair. JBA makes some nice shorty headers as well, but they cost $500 a pair.

sounds like a good option provided the bolts stay tight. I've hade problems with headers constantly coming loose.. I'll have to look into it.

As of now, I'm just goinig to live with the small leak untill the end of summer when I have some extra cash.

07 F150

I just had my right side (Passenger side) done on an 07 F150 5.4L. The part was $70.00 which included the gasket and a few bolts. The installation was $250.00 here in Salt Lake City. Dealership wanted $750.00 + part, another shop $400.00 minimum + part. These guys did it for $250.00 which I thought was worth it. It did not look like a job that I would have wanted to do on my own! I was glad that I paid to have it done!! My truck is nice and quiet now!

greg,
you said that ford had a set of headers that you were looking at, I'm curious to where you found then cause I'm in the market to buy some, I was looking at some jba's and gibson, but I wanted to see the ford ones. anywho just wondering where you found them at, thanks.

I saw them listed in the 2011 Ford Racing catalog. They were ceramic coated shorties for a 5.4L 3 valve F150 for around $300 or $400. The PN listed is M-9430-F543C for ceramic coated or M-9430-F543 for Stainless Steel.

Awsome, I'll look up those part numbers and check them out... Still weary on my manifold studs, I had an f250 and I had the problems on my passenger side and fix it, but then pulled a trailor 1700 miles and it started leaking again and actually stripped out, I don't want the same thing to happen with this 5.4 since its the same motor... Thanks for the info though!
