Question 410 engine?

A few months ago I bought two motors and two transmissions from my cousin. He said they were both 390s but when I tore the first one apart the pistons had 410 cast into them. Sadly this motor was blown up and had a wrist pin threw the oil pan and the rod completely destroyed. The #7 cylinder wal was severely craked and had a depression in it, My cousin told me he thought it was just the timing chain and when I told him it was blown up he said he did know that. The second motor had been siting out side for a while and I thought Id use it for parts, but after the fiaxco with the other motor I thought id see how bad it was. The cylinder walls were rusted and pitted but not bad enough to be thrown, Also there was more frozen water (March weather in the north) in the oil pan and left valve cover than oil. I am currently rebuilding it, after it was hot tanked and bored. Its pistons had 360 stamped on them , I know the 360,390 and 410 all use the same pistons. I love the FEs and would take them over a 460 or small block anyday. My question is could they be actual 410 and 360. I like 360s and these are underestimated motors but i would love to have a 410 or 406. If it is a 410 I may use the crank in the 360 block if I can find new rods. Can any body tell me why these pistons are marked so? The 360 appears to have been recently rebuilt but the 410 had factory head gaskets.

410 engine?

Basicly a 410 has 390 pistons and a 428 crank so it would be balanced different than a 390 or it would be balanced the same way a 428 is balanced, externally balanced and you should be able to see this on your balancer and ring gear. If you ask this qeustion in the F E forumn you will probably get a more deatailed answer. Eric

just to make you feel better, that motor may not have been a 410. most of the early 360's used 410 pistons. the 410 piston is the same diameter a as 390 but has a different pin height. ford used them in early 360's to reduce compression. the only way to tell the difference is to check the crank. give me the casting numbers off of the crank and i will tell you what it was before it blew. my bet is a 360 as i see so many of them. hawkrod
