Rusted out rotting rim?
I got a flat the other day and when I was working on it I got a close look and I was able to pull off a few pieces of rusted out metal. I think my rims are rotting out. Has that happened to anyone else? I should have taken a picture.

Not a Superduty thing but... I have a 98 Caddy that are chrome clad aluminum rims. For the past few years the chrome on the bead has been flaking off and in the process creating a slow loss of air pressure. My tire guy was able to apply a thin layer of silicone on the rim in the flaking area to help seal it and it usually holds for a while but a few months later another area will begin to flake and have the same slow leak. The rim are factory too so it's not just after market equipment. Guess it's the nature of the cladding.

JP I like your wheels, I found a set of them on CL near me for $400. I would like to go aftermarket so I could go wider but I don't want to spend the money.
Also my chrome is not chipping nor tires loosing air, the chrome covers are pulling away form the steel tho. Its the steel rim behind the chrome that is rusting and rotting off. I'm afraid if I keep them on there they might crack while I am driving. Especialy with 2k lbs in the bed...
Anyone know what the cheapest but still good rims are?? haha
RedBoat, The salt sucks but nothing beats those dollar bills, I mean snow, pilling up in on the roads!

Joe, hey just to clarify, you have aluminum rims with a factory clearcoating on them. Any rust you have found is if anything, coming from a brake component, as aluminum corrodes (white oxide powder) and steel rusts (red-brown scale/flake). Once you get a chip in the clearcoat, the aluminum rim is not alclad (coating of sacrificial aluminum) so it will begin to slowly corrode and lift the clearcoat off till it's all gone unless preventative measures are taken, i.e.- take to wheel shop and get repolished / clear coated. Brake components are more susceptable to corrosion being lower on the cathodic scale (gold being near the top) plus being constantly exposed to great amounts of heat and road grime / salt. Sorry for the long winded-ness, I'm a metalsmith by trade

I just found these rims, right down the street from me. Not sure if the backspacing is correct but if they fit I might buy them, be done with this problem.
