New Member & New Project!

Hey guys, Nate a new member to the Ford world here. I have a new project. A 1999 29 foot RV on a E-450 chassis (6.8l) with 11,000 miles. That has been sitting for ten years.

First I changes the battery, oil & filter, air filter, and coolant. The vehicle started and I bleed the coolant lines for 20 minutes and shut it down. All was OK...

The next day I went to start it and now it cranks but wont fire up. I tested the fuel pump and it primes. Also checked the Fuel pump shut off switch. I changed the fuel filter just in case. I figured that I should change it any way (gas in filter looked good and clean). Also, I have fuel to the valve (looks like an air stem for a tire) rail. (sorry for the poor wording). Also I pulled the two spark plugs, the first two on each column closest to the cab and both tested OK. Both fuse box contents are all check out and I moved relays and all are OK as well. I would find it hard to believe that all 10 injectors clogged after being ran for 20 minutes. What am I missing?

I'm stumped!

You need to check the actual fuel pressure at that Schrader valve (tire valve) on the fuel rail. What I do is find a fuel pressure gauge, remove that Scrader valve with a valve stem removal tool (I have one left from my bicycle days) and just hose-clamp a piece of fuel hose to the valve on the fuel rail.

Turn the engine key ON a few times while watching that fuel gauge. Should get to 28-30 lbs pretty quick. If it doesn't, you might have a piece of crud in the fuel pressure regulator.

Oh, and WELCOME TO FTE!

I would try and start it again but this time step of the gas just a little and see if it starts. If it does and it stops when you let off the automatic idle control is bad or stuck.

I hope it is as easy as this! Where is this located under the hood? I know on the 7.3l its right in the front of the motor.

For some reason I have a feeling it is something small like this.

Thanks! I didn't know that I could disconnect the valve. Looks like I have a few things to test this weekend!

It's located on the front of the motor on the driver's side just below the valve cover.

Sorry for the update delay, I had a intense summer semester at the school. I ended up draining all the fuel and about 13 gallons came out. I refilled about 18 gallons and got it started which is great and a real milestone but it still does not run real great. I can get it to idle and let it ran for about 7-8 hours to run some fuel through. When I press the gas normally It wants to bog out and die. I can lightly press the accelerator and work it up to a good rev. Also, I threw a code saying "system running lean bank 2" Today I did what Krewat said and did a fuel pressure test and only reached 10PSI. I changed the Fuel pressure regulator with little success. but I do think it does start a bit better with the new FPR. I didn't think It was a fuel pump issue because It primed but Its the only thing I can think of at this point...

I feel like i am all most on the road! thanks for all the help.

I've had a very similar situation with my old 94 pickup. The fuel pump still worked but it was weak, so the low pressure caused hesitation, and bogging when I put my foot into it, like when merging into traffic. I'll bet if you change your fuel pump, you'll be good to go.
