2wd to 4wd Conversion

Hey guy I need some advice on this conversion... Can I use my 2wd AOD tranny and put a transfer case on it? What would be the best axle ( i want to do a straight axle) and transfer case. Ive read on other sites that its a straight swap bolt on and very long procedure. Please dont tell me that it would be cheaper to buy a 4x4. Becasue I love my truck. I want to do a manual shift on the 4x4 and manual lockouts. I would like to use a 70's axle (dana 44???) and np205 t-case.

From 87 to 96 all the frames were the same, including 2wd and 4wd frames. Basically to save money Ford built all the trucks on the exact same frame so that is a plus. Unfortunately the 2wd aod will not work and you will have to find a 4wd version. As far as the front axle the 78-79 Ford f150s will have the solid axle dana 44 which is what you want. Just make sure to get one with disc brakes.

Not quite sure on that one. Both times I have done it we swapped out that autos that were in it for manuals anyways. Someone who has a little more experience with the autos will chime in soon though.

If the swap does work though if your going to swap out the tail shaft it means you will prob have to get a tail shaft from a 4wd so why not just use the whole trans you get for just the tail shaft?

the frames between 4x4 and 4x2 are not the same as you can see in my build thread. there are quite a few differences.

What are the differences then cause my 95 and 92 both have the same frame on them.

the tailstalk conversion will only work with a standard tranny, the output shaft is different in 2 wheel. the rear springs are bigger along with the hangers on a 4x4.driveshafts will vary among diferant styles,my short box stepside 4x4 was made for under $200. If you stick with the same model year, the front end will bolt right in.Spring and shock towers, radias arm brakets are the same. You should stick with same tranny style or go standard as your computer will like this also.I have done 4 coversions and all have done well,Its a real good time to rebuild all of these componets while they are out of the truck.

well for one thr front of a 4x2 is open where the 4x4 is boxed to mount the leaf spring shackle, the transmission crossmembers are totaly different so the front driveshaft can pass it.

your right the crossmember is different from 2 wheel to 4 and possibly std to auto. The frame changed in 92,bumber brackets etc changed in 92,because yours is older than 92, you`ll wanna stick with that generation as 92 and up are electonic. this can all be accomplished, if you stick within the same generation, it will make it easier to convert..

Half tons, the frames are the same up front. Because, isn't the OP talking about a 89. F-150? So, a TTB is a bolt in swap, a SAS, is part bolt in.

Anyways, in a manual or auto, you can swap out the tail shaft, along with the tail housing to make it a 4x4 trans. But that requires total disassembally.

A SAS is a easy task for a good backyard mechanic. If you have everything ready it can be done in a weekend

Ya the f150 was what i was referring to. I looked at my f250 and f150 and in both of the same section in front of the engine crossmember are both boxed. Behind the engine crossmembers are both open.

IIRC also the rear 4x2 springs are 2.5" and the 4x4 rear springs are 3".
