ZF 5 speed swap ability.

So, I've read in a few places that guys drill out holes on a 460 ZF to fit it to a 7.3, would it be possible to make a 7.3 ZF fit a 460?

I'd guess some sleaves for the bolts, but what is all different for sure? The alignment pins I know...

Yes, it is possible to elongate two bolt holes in the 460 trans to get it to fit the 7.3 but because of the shape of the flange it is not possible to get a 7.3 trans to fit a 460.

Anyway the relations in the diesel ZF 5 are said to be much longer (to take advantage of the PS torque), so I think they wouldn't work very well with a 460.

Hmmm that didn't translate directly, "gear ratios".

Ok, ya, the diesel has a higher 1st gear and a bit closer together on the other gears.

The Diesel ZF is a close ratio, and the Gas ZF is a wide ratio. There's been times when I've wished I had a close ratio trans, GearVendor or a 6 speed behind my V10. That jump between 3 and 4 is huge! If I shift out of 3rd at 2500 RPM ('bout 40 MPH) and grab 4th, it drops the engine all the way down to about 1500 RPM, and that's no good for acceleration.

I'm mainly looking for the lower 1st and a OD vs my C6. 3100 rpms at 65 isn't all that great with a 460. Pulls good like that tho!

Is the gas ZF that bad on ratios? I know the T19 (diesel trans) has a huge gap from 3rd to 4th, but didn't know the gas ZF5 had that big gap to.

I love my Diesel ZF5, all the gears jump to each pretty evenly and the jumps are pretty small to.
