A 3 speed automatic behind a big block in an '86 F250 would be the C6.

The '79 C6 will bolt in as long as it was behind a 460 or 351/400M engine..I believe Fords did have a 4 speed overdrive auto behind 460s in the 90's but I'm not positive. It'll also accept the NP 208 and adapter.

They usually had the E4OD (4 speed auto) behind big blocks in the 90's for an automatic... but I believe up until around '96 you could still get a C6 behind a big block on the heavier trucks (F350s).

The only problem you might run into is the output shaft, 2WD is different from a 4WD. As for the E4OD, it's only 3" longer overall than a C6, but the mount pad is 7" further back. It also is computer controlled and won't work on an 86 460 unless you buy a standalone transmission controller.
