Overfilled engine oil, can the diesel engine survive that?
Changed the oil in my truck last night, drove it to the car wash after the oil change because I left the HPOP cap off and blew oil all over....no more than a gallon so it didnt run out.
Started the truck up this morning, no problmes started great, started driving it to church and about 1/3 of the way there (3-4 miles) it starts knocking and just BELLOWING SMOKE.
I checked the engine oil today and drained out the overfilled amount and it looks like close to 3 quarts, no more but probably real close. My question is how much engine oil overfill can a diesel survive?
And what does it screw up when its over?
I dont know how it got that full....but it did.
truck died when driving it today trying to make sure the air was out of the HPOP lines. Had to get it towed home and now it sits.

After you drained the 3qts, did the knocking sound go away and the engine stopped smoking.
How much oil did you buy?

I know this is going to sound crazy, but I had a similar experience with how the truck was running, not wanting to start good, knocking like mad. Not much smoke though. It turned out to be the Cam Position Sensor. I don't fully understand it, but I went to the Navistar Parts counter and picked up a DU-87 CPS, put it in and the truck now runs fantastic. Like I said, I really don't understand it, but it worked for me. At least that would be where I would start as it is not that expensive and easy to fix.

A jiffy lube ? Really ? Your friend needs a re-boot, I realize that many people can't afford or have the skill (?) to do the oil change....but especially with a psd...you're asking for trouble at a jiffy lube, the economic times we live in should be a red flag, if you own a diesel....whatever the manufacturer....do your research, and and least....do your own oil changes
