Preventative FMX Transmission Rebuild

Okay, I had a senior moment and decided I wanted to have my FMX transmission "freshened" up. My original plan was put it in and see how it goes and pull it back out if it doesn't. That plan sounded less and less sound as I got to the point of installing it. I was looking for a $400-500 bill at most. Obviously, the transmission was in much worse shape than I imagined. It's costing me about $1000 to have it rebuilt. That does include $250 for a rebuilt converter that will be modified with a slightly higher stall speed for use behind a 302. The bill breaks down the cost as 6 hours of labor for $300 and the rest is parts. Did I get snookered or what? I think for that money I could have bought a rebuilt C4 on the web somewhere...

From my experience, if they are using quality parts and replacing everything that needs it, no, that's right where they end up (or higher). Six hours labor is shaving it close, too. I assume that's a drop-off price, they're not pulling it? What's the warranty?

Yep, it's a drop off. I haven't inquired about a warranty. He is replacing everything that needs replacing but parts for an FMX are sketchy so the quality is unknown. I'm just glad he was able to find everything. I thought the price was high but if you think it's about right I feel better about it.

Last time I checked (not very recently) Summit was selling a rebuilt AOD with all the usual upgrades for $1100. 1-yr warranty as I recall.

Once upon vehicle (2002), I had my local shop rebuild my FMX and install a shift kit for $450. The thing is awesome! I went back to the same shop (new owners) in 2009 to inquire about a tranny brake (unavailable for FMX) and they quote $1000 to rebuild (freshen) it. Go figure.

I have an FMX with a shift kit in my truck. Some extra weight due to cast iron case aside, I have always been quite happy with it. However, I will look for a C4 or C6 if and when.

Are y'all sure you have an FMX? The only trucks FMX's were installed in were 1973/77 F350's with the 300 I-6. Otherwise, Ford/Merc Passenger Cars only from 1969 thru 1989.

Some peeps confuse the FMX with the MX Cruise-O-Matic installed in 1958/67 352 & 1961/67 390 Passenger Cars, 1965/67 F100/350's w/a 352, 1965/72 F350's with the 300 I-6.

The MX uses a different trans pan and filter than an FMX.

Rule of thumb around here is that if you have a working FMX then keep it, if it needs work then replace it with a C4.

We have an acquaintance nearby our office(my job) I don't care how bad it is or what it is...He always starts at $2000
A coworker and I have sent many customers his way. The people at our office, seem to think the more you pay the better the service. And he is a good tranny guy. But not my tranny guy.
