Well crap! Looks like I'll be needing a new alternator VERY soon. Started the truck to move it 10 feet last night and heard this odd intermittent growling coming from under the hood. I'd heard it a couple times before but never was able to pinpoint it with the rattler running. Popped the hood and walked around front and the alt pulley was jumping around about a 1/4". Alt was so hot I couldn't touch it after about 30 seconds of running. I'm just glad it happened in the driveway right in front of the shop!

that ain't that bad Glenn, the last one i lost was 300 miles away from home with the 02. cost me close to $300 for a belt and the cheapest rebuilt alternator i could find..
the one before that was in the 88, and about 150 miles from home. i pulled the belt and drove home on the batteries, and with no vacuum for the power brakes.
it was a good thing it still had the 5 speed in it to use the engine for braking by downshifting.

I guess Ford alternators go out in the month of September? Seems to be the case here... Mine was too hot to touch as well, not to mention the cable was fried, as you know.
I had been hearing something up there off and on but couldn't tell what it was. It sounded like bearing noise and I could hear it from inside the cab, but not from under the hood, even with a mechanic's stethoscope. Honestly, I'm glad the alternator is all it is! The way it sounded through the firewall I was worried it could have been something much, much worse. Any recommendations for a replacement?
Hey all,
Haven't had the time to post lately but I've been lurking. A little over a week ago the fire got within about 300 yards of my house. They back burned up to it and it didn't get any closer.
Last Monday the whacko Forest Service Incident Commander decided to start a backburn about a mile down the road at 4:00 pm right as the wind shifted. They lost control of it and it burned up the hill taking one neighbors house, a shed, a utility trailer, a septic tank, and 4 houses water systems. Luckily the state guys were in the area and they defended the other 4 houses successfully. Here's some pictures of my local fire and a story about the lady who lost her house.
Where Nacny's house was.
My buddy's trailer.
Nancy's trucks.
Fire from my house.
Friends porch.
Where the fire came up the canyon.
The shed.
Then yesterday as I got out of class we were informed that there was a fire in town. It ended up taking off and destroying/damaging at least 100 homes. It seems they have things under control but the town was pretty devastated. Sorry for the long post but it was kinda needed for the explanation . I attached an article about Weed and an article about Nancy, my neighbor who lost her house.

Nate, do you have a local starter/alternator rebuild place? Maybe yours is too far gone, but just a thought. I run a mean green, but will not recommend them.. If you don't need a high amp alternator, I'd just go to napa if it were me. In fact, I have a new napa alternator as my spare. My pos I run quit and took 2 months to get back so had to buy another one to get by..
