This is a dumb question about Hubs

My 02 CC DRW was trying to pull a stump out but the tires spun. I went into electronic switch over to 4Hi but still spun the tires. Then I discovered I had hubs after 5 years never getting stuck (have a huge cab over most of the time).

I never switched my hubs to lock but often switched inside the cab to 4h and even 4l. Some one tell me I've never had it in 4x4 until I locked the hubs. If so I feel like a cuckold. I thought the electronic switch was all I needed

Thanks in advance

The vacuum hubs work in auto, and lock... If your not getting 4x4 when flipping the switch then you have a leak, or the hubs are broken. Not uncommon at all.

Even when the vacuum system and hubs are working properly, the auto lock hubs need a short travel distance to engage. The main reason the hubs have a 'lock' position is if you are in 2x4, not moving and need 4x4. The front axle will not engage simply with the dash **** under this condition.

This is strange Bob. I've been stuck a few times and just turn the **** to 4x4 and drive on. I've never had to get out and lock my hubs when stuck to get out.

The hubs can get gummed up over the years and you can also have a vacuum leak.

When you turn the **** to 4wd, does your AC unit go to defrost? ie air coming out the defrost vents?

Or....... they may have been replaced with non ESOF hubs that he has to lock ? It is strange if that's not the case !!! I'd suspect a leak somewhere too.

That is a good point. My Excursion had one auto and one manual when I bought it.

First off..There NO dumb questions here.We all learn together.
I still have the auto hubs.If I need 4hi I normally do not lock the hubs.If I am going to pull something heavy, stuck or great strain I lock the hubs and use 4 low.
