2005 6.0 Powerstroke. Yes or no?
Hey guys I'm thinking of getting my first diesel here soon and just wanted to get some more info from the people who drive or have driven them. I'm looking at getting a 2005 F-250 Powerstroke. Now I've heard the death stories about the EGR in these trucks and want to know how bad this really is and any other problems with these trucks. Truck has 216,XXX miles on it. I'll post the link to it and hopefully you guys can inform me with any problems I may face with this truck. Thanks. 2005 Superduty Crewcab F250-give away price! 4x4 Diesel

Get an Oasis report on the truck. This will let you know if it was a "problem" 6.0
Start with that. Also, I believe in the 6.0 section there is a "what to look for" thread when buying a 6.0 Spend as much time in that section as you can and you'll learn a lot of what causes the problems for the 6.0 IMO they are much better than they are perceived. I have 90k on my '05 and it has been a great truck(knock on wood).

Pcik up your self a scangauge II to take shopping with you. Check the temps of Engine coolant and compare with oil temp. Get the engine up to temp (190*) and take for a cruise at 60 mph and see what the spread is. The Scangauge II will also check the trucks FICM. (Scangauge II = $160)
Here is a thread on buying used:

I recently bought a f250 6.0 L with 212k and it runs great. I have received lots of good info on this forum...great advice so far. I'm learning more and more everyday about the engine thanks to this forum.
I got a scangauge2 at auto zone for $159 the other day. I love that thing. I do have a question though. How do i get to program the oil temperature reading and FICM on it?..
I love the truck, runs smooth and fixing to change the fluids myself after I get the socket recommended (a must have tool) to get the filters (oil/fuel) out.
Thank you all again for all the help.

I purchased a 2005 F-250 last year, which had 78,000 miles on it. I purchased a Scangauge II and brought it along during the test drive. I first noticed a 30 degree delta between the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) and EOT (Engine Oil Temperature). This indicated that the oil cooler was clogged and would need to be replaced immediately. Without my gauge, there would be no way of knowing this until bad things began to happen. If you're serious about buying a 6.0, the ~$150 expense on the Scangauge is a necessary investment.
I also used the gauge to check the FICM (Fuel Injection Control Module) for proper voltage levels which could indicate potential problems with injectors.
The engine did not show signs of coolant puking (white residue around coolant reservoir cap or bottle). There was no sign of white or blue smoke wile running. I did ask them not to warm it up before I test drove it to see how well it started cold.
I purchased the following parts for mine (many of these parts have been upgraded since they were weak links on the '05). Since the top half of the engine would be torn down it was an opportune time to do these:
Oil cooler
Bulletproof diesel EGR cooler
Upgraded standpipes
Upgraded dummy plugs
Upgraded STC fitting
Blue Spring upgrade
Banjo Bolts
Coolant filter from Dieselsite
EGR Cooler - BulletProofDiesel
I've also switched over to synthetic oil (Rotella T6 5W30) and purchased RiffRaff diesel CAC intercooler boots since my stock boots are seeping oil.
These trucks need a bit more attention and preventive maintenance than many folks are willing to deal with, but I love my Super Duty and wouldn't trade it for anything. This forum is THE BEST for help.

How many miles you can get depends on many factors. When buying a high mileage vehicle, you don't really know the entire history of how well it was maintained.
As far as oil, I stick with 5000 mile service intervals.

Thanks for all the help. The guy claims to be a Ford Master Tech so I'm assuming the truck has been well taken care of but I guess we'll see when I get there. A couple questions. Delete the EGR or leave it alone or where to go there? Also head studs I've heard are almost necessary on the 6.0's is this true? As far as mods go i only plan on getting a turbo-back and maybe an intake. All your thoughts on this would be nice because you all know more then I do! Thanks again
