5spd trans from bus to truck.

Here this maybe a stupid question, but I'm not sure about if this idea will work.
I have a 89 F700 school bus. It had a 429 Industrial motor. When I pulled the motor I notice the trans looked the same bolt up as the one for my 7.3 diesel in my 92 truck.
My truck is a 4x4. The question is would the bus transmission interchange to my truck.? All I need to do is change the tailshaft set up from the bus to the one from my 4x4.
The bus tranny works good an the one in my truck the 4th gear grinds at times when shifting. So I'm just thinking ahead if the trucks tranny goes if the bus one will work for me. It would same me some greif down the road if this happens.
So will these change?

I will go out on a limb and say nothing will interchange between the two boxes. They are probably different manufacturers. (BW for the 7.3 4 speed, a T19, and perhaps Clark or New Process for the bus trans.)

The bell to trans pattern is probably the same, the Ford "butterfly" pattern. But look at the input shaft. I'd bet the bus shaft is bigger than your PU shaft.

IF you can convert your TC to a divorced set up, you could probably use the bus trans. But I doubt you would find a TC adaptor for that trans that would fit your TC.

This is why I'm asking. Otherwise I rather sell this trans for someone to use in their farm truck if it will not fit my diesel.
Your probally right about the output shft sizes. That would play into this. I was just going by the bell housing look. The tranny is still in the bus.

IIRC, the 429/460 bell pattern looks similar to the 7.3, but is not interchangable. Are these both integral bell transmissions? If so, you have a ZF. Not sure what the bus would have, possilbly a ZF, but again, the bell pattern differs between the oil burner and the 429/460.

Well That answers that. I guess I will just sell it to some farmer like I did the motor. Someone will need it more than I will need it sitting here. Thanks for your help.

If it is a ZF5 with the big block gas bolt pattern, it is possible to get it to fit your diesel by elongating two of the bolt holes.
If it has the parking brake assembly bolted to the tailshaft housing you can just unbolt that assembly and your transfer case should bolt up. If no parking brake assembly then it would need a complete tear down to replace the tailshaft, better in that case to look for a diesel 4x4 trans (or a diesel trans with the parking brake).
