Fuel filter removal
Went to change my fuel filer under the drivers seat using the 1.25 socket and the plastic housing broke. Ford motor would not stand behind the cost to repair as I think it's a bad part or poor engineering. Has any one else had this problem? The ford dealer says that if they broke the part they would have to eat the cost ford would not compensate them.

Mike has a point, but it seems that most of these don't get rounded off when they fail so I'm not sure that there would have been a difference. No chance Ford will cover the repair, nor should they to be honest. In most cases when this kind of thing happens it's because of improper service procedures.
Not that this is likely what happened to you, unfortunately I think you just got unlucky.

That will give you the advantage of the 3 main parts should something kick up from the road and break one of them.
Make filter swaps easier, drop old, install new, clean out cap after truck is back running.
Plus you always have a spare in case you break it.
I keep the spare cap and both filters in two plastic coffee cans in the bed.
Spare filters for the road and a place to drain it if needed.

Do yourself a favor, order a spare cap, drain plug and water in fuel sensor.

the extra housing is a good idea incase of some crazy failure while changing the filter, or if you hit something.
Ive seen posts about the housing breaking on other sites, and I use a 12pt 32mm 1/2 drive (did it again Friday). perfect fit. Its on tight for sure (I've replaced my filters twice in 20k), but slow and steady backs it off. Sucks to be stranded.

Problem with more points is more pressure on a smaller surface on the cap. Now, I don't know where the OP actually broke this, bit, that's what happens if you use a socket with more than 8 points. The other thing to help prevent is actually torque to spec and put some oil on the threads and o rings, this really prevents some binding and if you are pulling it apart on the side of the road you will actually be done faster cause everything turns a lot easier IMO. Every time o have ever done a change after the dealer I have noticed its a way to tight, no oil on anything judging by hard it is to get the cap off. Just my 2 cents. I halwayscarry a set of fuel and an oil filter. I always carry minimal tools too. Including that beast socket.
