Awesome Tow!

Pulled my 5th wheel up to Mackinac City from Detroit and back this week. My 2008 6.4L, long bed, crew cab didn't miss a beat! Had to punch it a few times for the on ramps and passing, and could hardly tell the 5er was back there.

You begin to really appriecate it on the long hauls. Be sure to let the thing cool down on those road trips pulling.

Mine has been so hot the outside fenders are damn hot to the touch. When I am on the road I don't shut it down till the end of the day.

I am with you here. It is a dream to pull with this motor. I watch the EGT and DPF temps plus the Engine Oil Temp and Water Temp. When I stop, I let the EGT and DPF temps get back down to about 400 or so before I turn it off. When Pulling I never shut it off fueling as even that 10 or 15 minutes, its is not cooled back completely to what I like as a comfortable temp. I have found to go to high idle and it will cool more quickly than just idle. HAPPY RVING! KEEP IT SAFE!

Sounds like you had fun! What kind of fuel mileage were you getting? Thanks!

Hand calculated - about 10-11. My 5er is just under 10k loaded (no water carried).
Talking about cooling it down. I'd assume a few minutes of slow driving once off the highway to find a parking spot (store, gas, food) is enough time to cool the turbos before shutting it down??

I'd say so if ambient temps are around 80 outside. Also based upon your weight.

when you start getting to around the max 5er wt then more time would be needed.

Recommend you at least get something like a scanguage to monitor.

Thanks for the info. I have been looking into one of the scan gauges for my truck just to keep tabs on things even when I'm not towing.

Lately I am debating on spending the cash for a 6.7 vs getting a good 6.4
I have also heard some scuttle about issues on the 6.4 but I have also heard somehave hydrolocked the 6.7 after burning inj tips off. Any thoughts and comment are appreciated.
I run a 96 7.3 CC SRW and thinking about getting a 350 for the tow and a new model. I have a 35 ft tripleslide 5er River Canyon.

Thanks

I use the scangauge. It has made a world of difference and also has given more confidence in traveling. I now can monitor the Regens, effectively and all the sensors....Plus the fuel montors are fantastic and has helped me gain a bit more out of a tank of fuel..

A little off topic but the 6.4 is an emissions diesel so it take a bit of getting used to. The boards are usually filled with a lot of issues and very few of the good stories such as the op.

Read on and you will see some on both sides of the aisle.

It would be the same with the new 6.7 as well. But they do get a bit better mpgs.

Did somebody say something about towing at the limit? LOL. I'm right there and was out in the rockies two summers ago. I climbed about five of those high passes pulling that big ole mobile suites and we were able to pass everything except a couple of big 400 HP turbo diesel motor homes, Never got hot and not a bit of trouble. And that was before I took the government mandated exhaust clogger off. I'd like to go back to the west coast and see how we went over the passes now, truth is I don't think it could be much better than it was.

Went and bought a scangauge this afternoon. Just gotta hook it up.
I looked at the door jam and my truck is a job #1 (09/07) (I think). After getting back home after our trip, I looked at the exhaust pipes, and were a nice light shade of gray. I've taken it out on the interstate twice without the 5er since then and the truck just purrs. I think a hard tow every so often is very good for it.
Due for a fuel filter change next week. I'll ask for the used filters just out of curiosity. I checked fluid levels when I got back and all are where they are supposed to be. Also had the coolant nitrite levels checked on last oil change, and are good also. Gotta give it a bath tomorrow and a waxing.
Have a great weekend!

On the Scangauge, remember to use the X Gauge functions to access the other sensors. There are many codes provided by Scangauge and then more if you search the Internet. I found all the codes I needed and now have nearly 40 points of monitor.
