USCG Glacier

USCG Glacier
For our Coast Guard fans a historic icebreaker, originally USS Glacier and then USCG Glacier, was pulled into dry dock 2 Mare Island for hull cleaning. This is the first step before she gets towed to Esco Marine, Texas for scrapping.
Her history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Glacier_(AGB-4)
I was on her last year for parts picking. I know there are very last minute talks going on about saving her. The two Alaskan Senators want her saved, but MARAD is balking saying she is too far gone.
On another note the super secret Sea Shadow has been put up for bid to be dismantled. No one stepped up to save this when on historical hold.
Her history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_Shadow_(IX-529)
Below a web cam grab, of the Glacier, from Mare Island camera overlooking dry docks. Then a shot in better days.
Then shot of Sea Shadow entering HMB-1 at Pier 3 NAS Alameda where the USS Hornet is now docked.
My own shot from inside the HMB-1 18 months ago.

Here's a better Wiki link about Glacier. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...GJA9CBUh0AIqHw
I knew many good sailors who rode Glacier as a CG Ice Breaker. A very storied history indeed.

Here is the link to the web cam that is on 24 hours a day at the old Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Unlike Long Beach, where the massive Dry Dock 1 was filled in, all three at Mare are finally operational once again. The Navy was foolish when they closed down both shipyards rather than keeping one open.
